**Kindle Unlimited, wide, and direct are three ways to sell the same book, and they pay differently. KU means Amazon exclusivity in exchange for page-read income and a built-in audience of heavy readers. Wide means selling on all retailers (Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and more) for broader reach and no exclusivity. Direct means selling from your own store for the highest margin and full ownership of the reader. None is universally best; the right choice depends on your genre, your series, and your reader system.**

## Kindle Unlimited (exclusive)

- Income from page reads (KENP) plus sales, and access to a large pool of voracious KU readers.

- Requires Amazon exclusivity, so you cannot sell that title on other retailers or direct.

- Best for: genres with high read-through and binge readers (romance, many fantasy and thriller niches).

- Ads math leans on pages read per click; strong series read-through is what makes KU pay.

## Wide (all retailers)

- Reach readers on Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and libraries, not just Amazon.

- No exclusivity, so you can also sell direct.

- Slower to build on each store, and no page-read income, so it rewards patience and a back catalog.

- Best for: authors building a durable, platform-independent business and those whose readers live off Amazon.

## Direct (your own store)

- Highest margin (80 to 95%) and full ownership of reader data.

- You drive all the traffic and handle storefront, delivery, and support.

- Best for: authors who already have an email list and ads to send to it, especially for bundles and special editions.

> KU optimizes for reach and page reads. Wide optimizes for independence. Direct optimizes for margin and ownership.

## How to choose

- High read-through, binge genre, building fast: KU is often the simplest on-ramp to profitable ads.

- Want independence and your readers shop off Amazon: go wide.

- Have an audience you own and want maximum margin: add direct, often alongside wide.

Many successful authors evolve through these models: KU to learn ads and build read-through, then wide and direct to own more of the business. It is not a moral choice, it is a portfolio decision. Build once, scale wisely.
