**Who this is best for:** The [Rabbit EZ Tee](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-womens/running-shirt-womens/rabbit-ez-tee-womens) is best for runners who prioritize next-to-skin comfort for everyday training. Its soft, lightweight fabric and relaxed feel make it an excellent choice for easy miles, long runs, and anyone who wants a performance shirt that feels as comfortable as a favorite casual tee. Available for less than many of the highest-scoring options on the market, the EZ Tee holds its own in terms of comfort and performance.

**Why we love it:** The EZ Tee nails the fundamentals with an impressive balance of softness, performance, and value. Its comfortable fabric feels great against the skin, holds up well through repeated washes without losing its shape, and comes at a more accessible price than many premium running shirts, making it an easy everyday favorite.

**Should you buy it?** If you want a reliable, comfortable running shirt that delivers premium comfort without a premium price tag, the EZ Tee is an easy recommendation. It's especially well-suited for runners looking for an everyday training top that's durable, easy to care for, and comfortable enough to reach for run after run.

Low (minimal seam construction)

**Who this is best for:** The runner who wants one shirt that handles everything from running to running errands, the [Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Shirt](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-mens/running-shirt-men/patagonia-capilene-cool-daily-shirt) covers it all. It is also the shirt we would hand to a friend just getting into running who asks what to buy first. But sun seekers might look elsewhere as it has no UPF rating.

**Why we love it:** The recycled polyester jersey has a soft, forgiving drape that feels comfortable across body types, and the minimal seam construction means fewer potential chafe points on longer efforts. HeiQ Mint odor control genuinely extends wear between washes. We ran, hiked, and wore this shirt casually across a full week before it needed laundering, something we could not replicate with any other option. Fair Trade certified and built from recycled materials, the Capilene Cool Daily also aligns with Patagonia's reputation for responsible manufacturing.

**Should you buy it?** If your primary concern is maximum breathability for hot race days or intense intervals, the Capilene Cool Daily is not the most ventilated. Runners who train primarily in high heat or intense sun may want to pair it with a more aggressively ventilated shirt with a UPF rating for those sessions. But for a single shirt that works for all types of outings, at a price that undercuts most competitors' with similar features, the Capilene Cool Daily is where we would start.

**Who this is best for:** The **REI Active Pursuits** is an affordable shirt that is a favorite for [men](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-mens/running-shirt-men/rei-co-op-active-pursuits-t-shirt) and [women](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-womens/running-shirt-womens/rei-co-op-active-pursuits-t-shirt-womens). It is perfect for being outdoors, running in high sun, and hitting up a patio for lunch afterward. For anyone worried about staying safe in the sun, without breaking the bank, the Pursuits is the right choice.

**Why we love it:** We love how cheap and versatile this option is. Given the attention to comfort and sun protection, it feels like a steal. While it doesn't have reflective parts or an odor-management additive, we think it is one of the best bargains in running shirts, especially for those looking to buy multiples or be active in the sun.

**Should you buy it?** Yes, new and established runners alike will appreciate the straightforward design that blends better breathability and moisture management with the highest UPF rating in the lineup. While it isn't the best bet for super sweaty runners or race day, the Active Pursuits proves it can be a best friend for most activities, no matter where the day takes you.

**Who this is best for:** The [REI Swiftland T-Shirt](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-womens/running-shirt-womens/rei-swiftland-t-shirt-womens) is best for those who work up a sweat when moving. The Swiftland offers better breathability on a budget, tough-to-beat moisture management, and is a standout in this price range. The lack of UPF protection makes it less than ideal for high-sun runs, but it could be a great indoor or low-sun companion for longer runs where effort makes you sweaty.

**Why we love it:** We love the casual fit, superb moisture management, and lower price of the Swiftland. While it lacks sun protection and odor control, we think the improved airflow over the **REI Active Pursuits** makes it a budget contender for those who need the best moisture management without breaking the bank.

**Should you buy it?** There is much to love about the Swiftland, making it a shoo-in for many dedicated runners or those just getting their feet wet and aren't sure if they'll run long term. The Swiftland is a better fit for those who don't need sun protection than those who do, but otherwise, there is something here to love for most runners.

**Who this is best for:** The [Stio Lucent T-shirt](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-womens/running-shirt-womens/stio-lucent-t-shirt-womens) is best for runners and outdoor athletes who want a lightweight, high-performance shirt built for warm-weather training. It's ideal for people logging steady miles in the heat, mixing road and trail work, or anyone who wants a breathable, no-fuss top that performs well, offers added odor protection, and has a strong UPF rating.

**Why we love it:** The Lucent stands out for its clean, dialed-in simplicity and impressive comfort under pressure. The thin fabric is highly breathable and quick-drying, and it stays comfortable even when sweat starts to build. We also love the thoughtful construction, especially the strategically placed flatlock and taped seams that reduce irritation and let the shirt move naturally with your body during longer efforts.

**Should you buy it?** If you want a premium-feeling summer running shirt that prioritizes comfort, airflow, and smart design over flashy extras, the **Stio Lucent** is absolutely worth considering. It's a strong choice for runners who want something reliable for daily training in warm conditions and prefer technical performance without overcomplication.

**Who this is best for:** The runner who trains through summer heat, races in warm conditions, or simply runs hot. If you have ever peeled off a saturated shirt mid-run and wished it would just disappear, the [On Performance-T Shirt](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-mens/running-shirt-men/on-performance-t-shirt) comes close. At 3.60 ounces, it is the lightest shirt we tested, and the laser-cut ventilation in the back panel dumps body heat more aggressively than any other construction in our lineup. It is a specialist shirt built for one thing, and it does that one thing better than anything else here.

**Why we love it:** The laser-cut ventilation holes are not decorative. On hot interval days, we felt noticeably cooler in the Performance-T than in any other shirt, even options nearly as light. The recycled polyester and elastane blend has excellent four-way stretch that tracks with the body during hard efforts, and the bonded hems and taped seams are virtually undetectable against the skin. In our dryer testing, the Performance-T dried in 15 minutes, 5 minutes faster than the next-closest shirt, meaning it sheds sweat as quickly as it vents heat.

**Should you buy it?** The Performance-T is a single-purpose shirt, and that purpose comes with trade-offs. The close fit feels race-ready but limits casual or gym crossover; there is no UPF rating for sun protection, and the price is the highest in our lineup for a shirt you may only reach for on hot days. If you want one shirt that handles everything, the **Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Shirt** is the better all-rounder. But for the runner who knows exactly when they need maximum cooling, the Performance-T is the best tool for the job.

**Who this is best for:** The [Rabbit EZ Tee](https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/clothing-mens/running-shirt-men/rabbit-ez-tee) is the perfect running shirt for those seeking more sun protection. Thanks to a high UPF 50+ rating, the Rabbit is a great choice for those who run under the sun, participate in longer efforts, or enjoy the great outdoors and want versatility.

**Why we love it:** We love the high UPF rating and the general overall comfort of this shirt. With flat seams and raglan sleeves, this shirt is cozy enough for sitting outside for tapas, as well as for hitting the trail at a new pace. While it isn't the best at moisture management (see the **On-Performance** or **Patagonia Cool Daily** neither of those has a UPF rating.

**Should you buy it?** If sun protection is a top priority for you, we love the Rabbit EZ. Given that few shirts offer superior breathability and sun protection, we feel like we can accept the trade off here for slightly less airflow and moisture management to get the better protection. However, if your effort is likely to be super sweaty or nothing but the best breathability is acceptable, the Rabbit might be a pass.

## How We Tested

Our testing team wore each shirt across months of running, hiking, gym sessions, and everyday use to evaluate how they perform under real conditions. We logged miles on roads and trails in southwestern Colorado and along the central California coast, covering a range of climates from dry mountain heat to humid coastal air.

Our full reviews break down each shirt across four weighted metrics:

- Comfort (_30% weighting of overall score_)
- Breathability (_30% weighting_)
- Moisture control (_20% weighting_)
- Sun Protection (_20% weighting_)

Each shirt was scored across comfort, breathability, moisture control, and sun protection, with objective measurements supplementing our hands-on impressions. Dry-time testing involved soaking each shirt and timing recovery under controlled conditions, while fabric weight and seam construction were documented and compared side-by-side. We also considered how versatile the shirts are for other activities and just bumming around town.

## Finding the Best Running Shirt For You

A good running shirt does more than cover your torso. The right fabric keeps you cool when the temperature climbs, manages sweat before it becomes a problem, and sits against your skin without creating friction over the course of miles. The wrong one can overheat you, hold moisture against your body, or chafe in places you did not expect. With shirts ranging from ultralight race-day specialists to soft everyday options that double as casual wear, the decision comes down to where you run, how hot you run, and whether you need your running shirt to pull duty beyond the trail or road.

Synthetic weaves offer the best balance of moisture control and breathability.   Credit: Ally Arcuri

Most running shirts are made from synthetic fabrics, typically polyester, nylon, or elastane blends, chosen for their lightweight feel, moisture-wicking properties, and fast-drying times. Within that framework, manufacturers differentiate through fabric weight, seam construction, ventilation features, odor-control treatments, and sun-protection ratings. Understanding which of these features matters most for your running style is the fastest path to finding the right shirt.

### Where Do You Run?

Where and when you run should drive your shirt choice more than any single feature. A runner who trains on exposed desert roads in July has fundamentally different needs than someone logging wooded trail miles in the Pacific Northwest in October. Hot, humid climates demand shirts that prioritize airflow and fast drying above all else, while cooler or variable conditions reward shirts with a bit more substance and versatility.

Runners who spend significant time in direct sunlight should consider UPF-rated shirts. Sun protection ratings ranged from UPF 20 to UPF 50+, and the difference adds up across weeks of outdoor training. Runners who train primarily indoors, at the gym, or on shaded trails may find UPF less critical and can prioritize comfort and versatility instead.

**UPF vs Breathability**
It is hard not to notice that shirts with better breathability often have no UPF rating. It seems that the better the sun protection, the worse the breathability and moisture management can get. We think sun protection is paramount, and we encourage all outdoor runners to choose a shirt with UPF protection. While those without a UPF rating typically have better breathability test results, there are some standout options that manage to offer better airflow _and_ sun protection in the same shirt.

#### Breathability

Breathability measures how effectively a shirt moves heat away from your body. The lightest, most ventilated shirts in our testing used laser-cut perforations, mesh panels, or ultralight open-weave constructions to push air across the skin. These shirts excel on hot days and during hard efforts, keeping core temperature lower and reducing the clammy feeling of trapped heat. The trade-off is that highly breathable shirts tend to offer less warmth retention, less sun protection, and a more technical look that may not transition as well to everyday wear. If you run primarily in warm conditions or tend to overheat, breathability should be among your highest priorities.

Each shirt is designed to manage moisture a bit differently. Some shirts feature cool-feeling fabrics, while others lean into weaves that draw moisture away from the skin for evaporation.   Credit: Ally Arcuri

#### Moisture Control

Moisture control and breathability are related but distinct. A breathable shirt moves heat; a shirt with strong moisture control moves sweat. The best performers wick moisture from the skin's surface to the fabric exterior, where it can evaporate. Fabric weight plays a direct role: lighter shirts absorb less water and dry faster, while heavier constructions can become saturated and uncomfortable during sustained effort. If you run in humid conditions, sweat heavily, or log longer distances where accumulation becomes a factor, prioritize shirts that scored well in moisture control. Odor-control treatments like HeiQ Mint, DAO, and antimicrobial finishes also play a role in how many wears a shirt can handle between washes.

### Do You Need Versatility?

Not every runner wants a shirt that only works on the run. If your training shirt also needs to handle the gym, a weekend hike, or a coffee stop afterward, versatility becomes a meaningful factor. The most versatile shirts in our testing paired soft fabrics with modern athletic fits that do not scream “_running shirt,_” plus features like odor control and UPF protection that extend their usefulness across activities. Dedicated running shirts, by contrast, tend to prioritize airflow and weight savings over style and everyday wearability, with close fits and ultralight constructions that look and feel technical.

Consider how many shirts you want in your rotation. A highly versatile option can reduce the total number of shirts you need by covering more use cases, which can justify a higher price. A specialized performance shirt, on the other hand, may be the best tool for race day and hard sessions, even if it stays in the drawer the rest of the week.
