## Webinar recap - Book and Claim explained

Book and Claim is the transport industry's only chance to catch up on its emissions-reduction trajectory. And it is easy to incorporate it into your decarbonisation journey.

According to the International Energy Agency, transport accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the current pace of decarbonisation, the transport industry will fall short of meeting the targets set by the Paris Agreement. We must use innovative tools to prevent this from happening. One such tool is Book and Claim.

Book and Claim is useful to make low-emission transport services accessible to businesses. And its value goes beyond that: it can also play a pivotal role in scaling low-emission logistics solutions.

## Book and Claim and Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

* * *

In June 2026, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) released the **Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0**, formally recognising Book and Claim as a credible mechanism to support corporate decarbonisation and advance science-based climate targets.

The Standard further acknowledges a growing reality: many of the technologies and solutions required for deep decarbonisation are not yet available at the scale, speed or location needed to meet global demand. Recognising these limitations, **SBTi has introduced an implementation hierarchy** that enables companies to extend their impact beyond their immediate operations and value chains, helping to accelerate broader market transformation.

A significant evolution within the updated Standard is the introduction of the "best efforts" principle. **Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, organisations are expected to demonstrate that they have set ambitious science-based targets, established robust implementation plans, pursued all feasible emissions reduction opportunities across their operations and value chains, and transparently communicated where barriers have limited further progress**. Companies must also show how they are actively working to overcome these constraints over time.

As part of this approach, the Standard recognises market-based instruments supported by established chain-of-custody models, including mass balance and Book and Claim. By creating demand signals for low-carbon fuels, renewable energy and other emerging climate solutions, these mechanisms can help scale critical decarbonisation technologies, strengthen investment confidence and accelerate the transition to net zero. They also provide organisations with a practical pathway to continue making measurable progress towards their climate ambitions as markets mature and solutions become more widely available.
