I could find my preferred backlight brightness and warmth, adjusting the warmth and brightness across 24 levels to find a preferred combination, which I appreciated when reading late into the night. You can also listen to audiobooks, too, if you prefer—just connect a pair of wireless earbuds or headphones. While it comes in three colors, I’m obsessed with the raspberry option, though jade and black look equally nice. To find a book on your Kindle, you can use the search bar to locate it in your library. If you don’t own it already, the software populates Kindle Store results, which I found useful. First, there’s the backlight, which consists of just one shade. While you can adjust it, you can’t alter the warmth. I find the blue light to be uncomfortable after a while, and I avoided this model closer to bedtime, but your mileage may vary. While its battery life is half that of the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, it still lasts up to six weeks on a charge, which is plenty of life for my reading needs. I love opening my Kindle case and seeing my library and book covers in color—it’s a small detail, but it’s genuinely delightful. That said, if you don’t read many comics or image-heavy books, this feature probably isn’t essential or worth the upgrade. But for anyone who does, it’s a real game-changer. ### Some Color Degradation, But It’s Expected If you’re expecting truly crisp color, you may be a little disappointed. This model uses two stacked plates, a grayscale plate and a color plate. The grayscale plate has a pixel density of 300 pixels per inch (ppi)—a measure of how many pixels are packed into each inch of the screen. The higher the ppi, the more detailed and crisp the display appears. It comes in two colors, and I like the white option. After testing it for several weeks, I also didn’t notice any yellowing, which can be common in devices housed in white plastic cases. While the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite's power button is located on the bottom edge of the case, the Kobo Clara Colour's power button is recessed on the back. Blue and red gradients look bright and clear without feeling overpowering. Because it’s a 6-inch display, it’s a little smaller than I’d like. However, it’s good enough for most needs, and I found it was a worthy tradeoff for commuting or traveling. You can choose between several font settings, including a dedicated dyslexia-friendly font, font sizes, line spacing, margins and more. You can also input your average bedtime, and the Kobo recognizes the day’s light patterns and dims blue light closer to bedtime. The Kobo Clara Colour features a color backplate that shows colors nicely. There's only one setting, so don't expect any customization options. Amazon has made it harder to remove the digital rights management (DRM) on purchased e-books, which in turn makes it much harder to transfer your purchased e-books to other devices or sideload e-books. Kobo, on the other hand, offers easier integrations; if you have an e-book that you’d like to read and the file supports DRM removal, you can easily sideload your books into the Kobo Clara Colour by connecting it via USB-C to your PC and transferring the file. Connect your local library card to your OverDrive account, and you can check out e-books. As an example, when I was reading _Wuthering Heights_ and didn’t want to carry my large physical copy, the Kobo Clara BW allowed me to borrow it in less than a minute, and I could continue the story in a much smaller package while commuting. You can’t sideload books via Google Drive, as Kobo paywalled this feature for the Kobo Libra Colour. However, if you have books without a DRM, you can connect it to your laptop via a USB-C cable to load e-book files. ### Decent Battery Life I didn’t have to charge the device often, as the Clara BW’s battery life lasts up to 53 days. It also has plenty of storage to take all your books with you. * * * ## How I Selected The Best E-Readers To determine the best e-readers, I read more than 25 books over the course of several months across multiple devices, taking into account touchscreen responsiveness, operating system, battery life, display features and more. - I narrowed down my top picks to models from reputable brands, including Kobo and Amazon Kindle. - Once I chose my top contenders, I read extensively across each device, checking for dyslexic-friendly fonts, light/dark modes and more. - Where possible, I connected my library card and attempted to upload borrowed books. I also attempted to sideload books using Calibre software. - Because I tested e-readers often over several weeks, I also evaluated battery life. During travels, I charged the e-reader to 100% and read on planes, subways and more.
