We use it to chat, share links, track project progress, monitor key metrics, and plan our schedules. While Slack has earned acclaim as a workplace tool (see how I did that Facebook?), it’s also a fairly popular community platform. People create Slack communities to share, discuss, and debate everything from data science and software development to [Star Wars](http://starwarschat.herokuapp.com/) and [Intermittent Fasting](https://wefa.st/). Perhaps this all sounds a little nerdy, but according to [Standuply.com](http://www.standuply.com/), over 1,000,000 people have joined a Slack group in the past couple of years. That’s all despite the fact that Slack wasn’t designed to support open-ended community conversion. As noted in [Pando](https://pando.com/2015/02/23/consumers-are-using-slack-beyond-the-enterprise-whether-the-company-likes-it-or-not/), “Public Slack groups are without a doubt outside of the initial vision the company’s founders had for how their product would be used.” Perhaps that’s why Slack communities are so different from typical internet forums, or even sites like Reddit. First, many Slack communities have an approval process. People tend to use their real names on Slack, so communities there tend to feel more personal.
