**Welcome back to the Writing Community Chat Show!** If you’ve been hanging out with us on the podcast or YouTube channel, you know we live by one rule: _The community is stronger than the individual._

Today, we’re taking that philosophy to the thorniest part of the writing journey—getting your finished masterpiece out of your brain and onto a reader’s shelf.

We are writing this in **2026**. The wild west days of self-publishing are gone. The landscape is now a highly efficient, tech-driven ecosystem. The giants are still giants, but the real magic is happening in how smart indies are connecting different services to maximize both control and profit.

You don’t have to pick just one partner anymore. In 2026, you build a **Publishing Stack**.

Just check out this [article we wrote about the mighty indie Steven Aitchison](https://open.substack.com/pub/thewccs/p/from-41-ad-spend-to-240k-sales-the?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web) to learn what is possible.

We debated putting a paywall on this. This level of curated comparison is often sold for £38+ ($50+). But our mission is community first. We want _everyone_ in the Writing Community to have the best chance to succeed. If you find value in this, the best way to say thanks is to share it with one other writer. Or become a paid subscriber to say thanks.

These are the companies you can’t ignore. They form the backbone of almost every successful indie author’s business plan. These companies are “DIY”: they provide the platform, you provide the professionally formatted files. The setup is generally free, and they take a percentage of sales.

- **Overview:** Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing remains the dominant ecosystem for ebooks and Print-on-Demand (POD) paperbacks/hardcovers.

- **The 2026 Reality:** If your book isn’t on Amazon, it doesn’t exist to 70% of readers. KDP is non-negotiable.

- **2026 Update—GEO (Generative Engine Optimization):** When setting up your book details in 2026, you aren’t just pleasing “bots”; you are feeding AI. Amazon’s search is now conversational (”Find me a book like _Project Hail Mary_ but with more humor”). Your metadata (blurb, categories, series description) must be conversational and rich, not just keyword-stuffed.

- **Benefits:** Still the best royalties (70% ebook, 60% print minus printing). Access to Kindle Unlimited (KU)—which is crucial for genre fiction (Romance, Thriller, Sci-Fi).

- **Overview:** Draft2Digital (D2D) simplifies the process by distributing your ebook to _everyone else_; Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and thousands of libraries.

- **The 2026 Reality:** Following its merger with Smashwords, D2D is now the undisputed monarch of “Going Wide.” They handle the formatting and distribution to dozens of storefronts so you don’t have to manage twenty different dashboards.

- **2026 Update—The Smashwords Edge:** As of Jan 1, 2026, the Smashwords storefront (owned by D2D) pays **75% royalty** on ebooks priced over £2.27 ($2.99). This beats Amazon’s 70%.

- **Benefits:** You get **free formatting tools** (still the best in the biz) and a simplified workflow. They keep 10% of the retail price. _Note: As of 2026, Draft2Digital has also improved its own POD print service, making it a viable alternative for print distribution._

- **Overview:** The self-publishing arm of the world’s largest book distributor.

- **The 2026 Reality:** If you have dreams of your physical book sitting on a shelf in a high street bookstore like **Waterstones** or a local indie shop, you _must_ use IngramSpark. Bookstores cannot (and will not) order books from KDP Expanded Distribution.

- **Benefits:** Unmatched print quality, expansive hardcover options, and access to the catalog used by virtually every bookstore and library worldwide.

- **2026 Update—Fee Shifting:** IngramSpark mostly did away with its previous setup and revision fees, making them fierce competitors to KDP Print for smart indies.

If you are a UK/European author (like many of us here at the Chat Show), you need this addition to your stack.

- **Overview:** A UK-based POD company that has taken the industry by storm.

- **Why You Need It:** They offer superior print quality (especially for hardcovers and color) and much lower shipping costs for UK/European authors than the US-centric giants.

- **The Direct Edge:** This is why BookVault is vital in 2026. They have the best integration for selling books **directly from your own website** (via Shopify, WooCommerce, or TikTok Shop). When you sell direct through BookVault, you aren’t paying a 30% commission to Amazon. You keep **up to 90% of the profit**. In 2026, selling direct is the hallmark of the business-savvy indie.

- **Overview:** While not a publishing platform, Reedsy is where the best indies go to _build_ their book _before_ uploading it.

- **How to Use It:** It’s a curated marketplace of vetted, ex-”Big Five” editors, cover designers, and marketers.

- **The 2026 Reality:** With the flood of AI-generated content in 2026, human-crafted quality is the new barrier to entry. Don’t pay a “full-service” company £3,800 **(**$5,000) for formatting and editing. Use Reedsy to hire professionals, retaining total creative control and 100% of your rights. Their free online formatting tool (Reedsy Studio) is excellent for clean EPUBs.

    ## **What About Full-Service Companies? (Mindstir, Outskirts, Troubador)**

While the DIY route is the bread and butter for most indies, you may have heard of companies like **[Mindstir Media](https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=676f2385a65769ba2b2e7c78ef3eda8fefd325fd3c7c3acea75905902cf0a118JmltdHM9MTc3MzUzMjgwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=0c99500a-bd0d-6661-206d-4697bcb66741&psq=Mindstir+Media&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9taW5kc3Rpcm1lZGlhLmNvbS8)**, **[Outskirts Press](https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=532ff832046c3eba5b3e04eb1e9f99383e2c28f3b8b23186283998c6181aef27JmltdHM9MTc3MzUzMjgwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=0c99500a-bd0d-6661-206d-4697bcb66741&psq=Outskirts+Press&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9vdXRza2lydHNwcmVzcy5jb20v)**, or (in the UK) **[Troubador](https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=19addbe7640795a44a7149fcf23a1a24a8810b60b001f22a409b8dfbd48b2fc6JmltdHM9MTc3MzUzMjgwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=0c99500a-bd0d-6661-206d-4697bcb66741&psq=Troubador&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly90cm91YmFkb3IuY28udWsv)**. These are categorised as **Full-Service or Hybrid Providers**. They essentially act as your “outsourced publishing department,” taking the logistical weight off your shoulders in exchange for a premium upfront fee.

In 2026, the choice between DIY and Full-Service usually comes down to a simple trade-off between **time** and **money**:

    - **Mindstir Media:** Known as a high-end powerhouse in the US, Mindstir offers packages starting around £2,492 and scaling up to £12,842+ (**$3,299**/**$17,000+)**. They are best for authors seeking “celebrity-level” polish, offering high-profile endorsements (like Kevin Harrington from _Shark Tank_) and aggressive PR distribution to major networks like NBC and FOX.

    - **Outskirts Press:** A veteran in the industry with a long-standing A+ reputation. They focus on a streamlined, “one-click” experience. They are ideal for authors who want a professional result without having to vet individual freelancers on their own.

    - **Troubador (UK):** For our UK listeners, Troubador is the gold standard for high-quality production. Unlike simple print-on-demand services, they prioritize bookstore-quality physical copies and have a dedicated sales team that helps get books onto the shelves of high-street retailers like **Waterstones**.

    - **The DIY Alternative (KDP / D2D / IngramSpark):** By contrast, these platforms are **free to use** because they take a percentage of your sales. This “Do It Yourself” model is best for authors who want total creative control, 100% rights retention, and the ability to maximize their per-book royalties.

Ultimately, these full-service companies are perfect for **“more money than time” authors** such as CEOs, busy medical professionals, or legacy writers who need a hands-off approach and are willing to invest in a premium, managed experience.

**Our Chat Show Take:** These companies are _not_ the enemy. They offer a legitimate service for authors willing to invest thousands of dollars to have someone else handle the logistics (ISBNs, formatting, cover art, upload).

However, **90% of our listeners should go the DIY route (Phase 1+2+3).** You will learn more, retain total control, and make significantly more profit per book. If you do consider a full-service provider, _always ensure you retain 100% of your rights before signing._

1. **Stop Chasing Virality:** In 2026, the algorithm is fickle. The real competitive moat is a **deep, focused community**. Focus on getting 100 people who love your work enough to sign up for your Substack/newsletter, rather than 10,000 casual TikTok followers.

2. **Rights Retention is Everything:** Do not sign any agreement that requires you to give up your rights (especially ebook or print rights) for more than a year.

3. **Use the Hybrid Workflow:** Don’t pick just one.

    - **Publish** to KDP for Amazon sales.

    - **Distribute Wide** via D2D for all other ebook storefronts.

    - **Print** via IngramSpark for bookstore accessibility.

    - **Sell Direct** via BookVault (for UK Direct sales).

4. **AI is Your Assistant, Not Your Author:** It’s 2026. We know you are using AI. Use it to check your grammar, brainstorm marketing angles, or draft your AI-friendly metadata (GEO). **Do not use it to write your book.** Readers can tell, and they will punish you. Human voice is the premium product of 2026.

    ## Warning Signs: How To Spot The SHARKS!

The line between a legitimate Hybrid and a predatory Vanity Press can be thin. If you see any of the following, **run, don’t walk, the other way.**

    - **The Out of the Blue Email:** In 2026, legit publishers (including hybrids) rarely cold-email unknown authors. If you get a gushing email praising your book from someone you didn’t query, it’s likely an AI-generated script designed to flatter you. These are on the rise. We get SO many.

    - **Amazon Impersonators:** Watch out for companies with names like KDP Publishing Pro or Amazon Book Specialists. These are **not** Amazon. They use the name to trick you into thinking they are the official platform.

    - **The Rights Grab:** This is the big one. A legitimate self-publishing service or hybrid should **never** take your copyright or your subsidiary rights (like film or foreign language). If the contract says they own the rights for _any_ length of time, it’s a vanity trap.

    - **Guaranteed Bestseller Status:** No one can guarantee this without gaming the system (like putting your thriller in a 18th Century Tupperware category for five minutes). It’s a hollow badge that doesn’t lead to real sales.

    - **Pay-to-Play Opportunities:** Avoid anyone asking for a coordination fee to appear on a podcast, join a book club, or enter a prestigious award. Real opportunities are earned, not bought.

    - **High-Pressure Tactics:** If they say the discount expires tonight or they only have one spot left this month, hang up. Professional publishing moves slowly.

    > **The Chat Show Golden Rule:** Before signing anything, check the [ALLi Watchdog Desk](https://selfpublishingadvice.org/watchdog-2/) or [Writer Beware](https://www.writerbeware.com/). If the company is on their “Naughty List,” keep your wallet closed.

We hope this helps you make the right decision for your book. If you have any questions, pop them in the comments, and the Chat Show community will do its best to help!
