All elevators and escalators in New York City must be properly maintained and installed. The Department of Buildings' Elevator Division helps ensure the safe and proper use of elevators and escalators. They follow the New York City Building Code and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standards.

Elevators and escalators must pass installation inspections and regular checks by the Department of Buildings to be operated legally.

Building owners must:

- Pay all inspection fees
- Keep all elevators and escalators in good condition

If they do not follow the regulations, they may get fines.

Please contact the [Department of Buildings](https://www.nyc.gov/site/buildings/dob/contact-us.page) for more information.
