"Hidden city ticketing" can offer steep discounts on airfare. Basically, you [book a flight past your destination](https://lifehacker.com/book-airline-flights-past-your-destination-for-cheaper-5478315 "open in a new window"), with your target destination as a stop on the route, and save more than if on the direct route. Skiplagged is one site that shows you these hidden deals.

For example, a direct flight from Milwaukee to Detroit on December 11 costs $407, but Skiplagged shows there are flights from Milwaukee to St. Louis stopping in Detroit for $104—$303 less. You'd book the MKE to STL flight and just not get on the connecting flight after it lands in DTW.

This is not without its risks and inconveniences. You can't check your bag, because it will end up on the ticket final destination city. You also only want to do it for the first leg of the trip on a one-way flight, in case the trip gets canceled past that. Weather or other delays could cause a problem as well if you're rerouted to another connecting city. Airlines also do not approve of this, as witnessed by US Airlines and Orbitz's lawsuit against Skiplagged.

If you're willing to take those risks, Skiplagged, as long as it doesn't get shut down by the airlines and other online travel sites, makes finding those hidden, cheaper fares much easier.
