HARPA AI already includes a built-in [/summary](https://harpa.ai/guides/summarize-pages-and-youtube-videos-to-text) command that works out of the box with web pages, PDFs, YouTube videos and chat threads. You don't need to configure anything — just [install HARPA AI](https://get.harpa.ai/), open a page, press **Alt+A** (Windows) or **^+A** (Mac) and run **/summary**. The command automatically picks the right context parameter for the page you're on — **{{page}}** for articles, **{{transcript}}** for YouTube videos and **{{thread}}** for chat threads — so it correctly parses and summarizes the content without any extra setup.

This guide is for those who want to go further: customize the summary prompt, extract more messages than the default, analyze conversations in depth or parse chat data to send it elsewhere — to a webhook, Google Sheets, Notion or any other service via [automation steps](https://harpa.ai/chatml/automation-steps).

## [\#](#the-{{thread}}-parameter) The {{thread}} Parameter

HARPA AI provides the **{{thread}}** parameter that lets you extract chat history, parse message threads and generate AI-powered summaries — all without leaving your browser or copy-pasting anything.

## [\#](#where-does-it-work?) Where Does It Work?

The **{{thread}}** parameter supports extracting messages and comments from 7 major platforms:

- **Discord** - server channels, forum posts and threads
- **WhatsApp** - group chats and personal conversations (web.whatsapp.com)
- **Telegram** - private chats, group messages and public channels (web.telegram.org)
- **Reddit** - post discussions and nested comment threads
- **YouTube** - video comment sections
- **Facebook** - post comments and replies
- **X (Twitter)** - tweet replies and conversation threads

HARPA automatically detects the platform, scrolls through the page to collect messages and feeds the extracted conversation into your AI prompt.

## [\#](#how-to-summarize-a-chat-thread) How to Summarize a Chat Thread

1. Open HARPA AI by pressing **Alt+A** (Windows) or **^+A** (Mac).
2. Navigate to any supported page — a Discord channel, a Reddit post, a YouTube video, etc.
3. Type a prompt using the **{{thread}}** parameter and press Enter, for example:

```
Summarize this thread for me in 5 bullet points: {{thread}}
```

HARPA will parse the conversation, extract usernames, timestamps and message content, and pass everything to the AI model for analysis.

By default, **{{thread}}** scrapes up to **100** messages from the conversation. You can adjust the extraction depth with the **limit** option to capture more or fewer messages:

-   `{{thread}}` - extracts up to 100 messages (default)
-   `{{thread limit=50}}` - quick overview of recent activity
-   `{{thread limit=500}}` - deeper conversation analysis
- `{{thread limit=1000}}` - comprehensive thread extraction for long discussions

A higher limit is useful for active Discord channels, lengthy Reddit debates or WhatsApp group chats with extensive message history. A lower limit works well when you just need a quick recap of the latest updates.

## [\#](#example-prompt:-summarize-a-discord-channel) Example Prompt: Summarize a Discord Channel

Open a Discord channel in your browser, paste this prompt into HARPA AI and hit Enter:

```
Create a concise, high-value summary of a Discord channel.
Requirements:
- The output must be in {{language}}
- Be concise and optimize for a busy reader
- Focus on actionable insights and important context
- Do not add unnecessary introductions or filler
Include the following:
- Key discussions, decisions, or announcements
- Mentions of people who posted the most important or impactful messages (by username)
- Notable insights, opinions, or expertise shared by specific participants
- Any unresolved questions, next steps, or follow-ups that may be useful
DISCORD THREAD: {{thread limit=1000}}
YOUR SUMMARY:
```

This prompt works with any supported platform. Simply swap the context label to match your use case — "WHATSAPP CHAT", "REDDIT THREAD", "TELEGRAM CHAT", "YOUTUBE COMMENTS" — and adjust the message limit as needed.

## [\#](#use-cases) Use Cases

- **Community managers**: digest daily activity across Discord or Telegram channels without reading every message
- **Researchers**: quickly extract key opinions and arguments from Reddit threads or Twitter conversations
- **Content creators**: mine YouTube comment sections for audience feedback, video ideas and frequently asked questions
- **Team leads**: catch up on WhatsApp or Telegram group discussions after being away
- **Social media analysts**: track sentiment and talking points across Facebook and X threads

## [\#](#save-it-as-a-reusable-command) Save It as a Reusable Command

Instead of pasting the prompt every time, save it as a custom HARPA command:

1. Type **/** in HARPA AI chat and click **CREATE**.
2. Add a **GPT** step and paste the summary prompt.
3. Save your command with a name like "Summarize Thread".

Now you can run your thread summarizer on any supported page with a single click. Learn more in the [Custom AI Commands](https://harpa.ai/guides/custom-page-aware-chatgpt-commands) guide.
