However, there are some trade-offs, such as no warm light, no speakers, and sometimes finicky refresh rates. ### Hardware The Viwoods AI Paper Reader features a traditional black-and-white e-paper display powered by the latest-generation E INK Carta 1300. The resolution is 824×1648 with 300 PPI. It has a front-lit display for reading at night, but lacks an amber LED color temperature system, and the screen is flush with the bezel and protected by a layer of glass. The overall color scheme is a light grey surrounding the e-paper screen and on the back panel. Underneath the hood is a 6nm octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. It has a speaker, Bluetooth 5.1, and dual microphones for voice communication apps. It comes bundled with ChatGPT5 / Gemini-2.5-flash / DeepSeek-R1. Flip the screen from portrait to landscape mode via a G-sensor. The Palma Pro introduced a data SIM for apps and reading on the go, and the AI Paper Reader supports data-only SIM cards with 4G speeds and also supports Wi-Fi 2.4G and 5.0G. This will ensure that Google Play apps will continue to work for the next 5-8 years, before the OS is out of date. All apps and browsing functions will work fine due to the Fast/ultra-fast/best display modes/quick refresh technology. The stock reading app supports PDF, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, and EPUB3, and e-books can be read offline. The device comes with a mix of pre-installed apps like Kindle, the New York Times, Chrome, and Meta’s Messenger, alongside an “app store” where you can grab a handful of programs directly without needing to log into a storefront, similar to what you might find with the Palma 2. Plus, it offers access to the Google Play Store, though setting it up requires a bit of tinkering with the settings to “certify” the device. With a solid 128GB of internal storage, you’ve got some room to work with, and you can also leverage cloud storage options through Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. Just a heads up, there’s no slot for a Micro SD card, so that 128GB is your limit. However, that should be more than sufficient, considering you likely won’t be loading up a huge collection of media files or photos. Similar to the larger AiPaper tablet, this device integrates AI features seamlessly across its operating system and apps. A dedicated physical button on the right side of the device activates an AI chatbot. By default, it launches Chat GPT-4o, but users can switch to alternatives like GPT-5, GPT-4o-mini, Gemini-2.5-flash, Gemini-2.5-pro, DeepSeek-R1, or DeepSeek-V3 through a dropdown menu. This might be useful for some, but for an e-reader, I am not sure how useful it is. ### Reading The Viwoods AI Reader has a smartphone form factor, so reading on it is very similar to an iPhone Pro Max or a large-screen Pixel or Samsung. Likely, everyone has a smartphone or at least seen one in person. Reading is very good, with more text presented top-down rather than side-to-side on a dedicated e-reader such as an Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble NOOK. The Kobo and Kindle apps are preinstalled on this device, so one of these two will likely be the one you use. There are two volume buttons on the side, which can be used for physical page-turn buttons, so you can use them one-handed, as opposed to holding it with both hands and using the touchscreen to turn pages. ### Wrap Up The “ViWoods AI Paper Reader” is easily the best-looking device we’ve held in the past 2 years. The screen is beautifully matte, the rear glass panel has almost no Gap, and the aluminum body has been meticulously tooled to be perfect to the touch. Whether you’re pressing the AI button, the volume buttons, or the power button, they have a satisfying click to every one of them. This unit has a SIM card slot for data communication, a USB-C port, as well as multiple microphones.
