What is the best streaming software in 2025?

Whether you are already a streamer putting out content, or you are looking to start - one of the first decisions you will need to make is which software you are going to be using.

Whilst there are many options, including those integrated into streaming platforms, many overlays are made to be used with streaming software.

We will go over the most popular streaming software options for you to use to create and stream your content.

![OBS Studio](https://getrektlabs.com/cdn/shop/files/Getrekt_Instructional_5_-_Full_Setup_-_frame_at_1m40s.jpg?v=1739533728&width=1600)

### OBS Studio

OBS Studio, known usually as just OBS, is likely the most popular streaming software available. Many of our stream overlays here at GETREKT are made to be installed in one click with the platform.

##### **OBS Studio Pros and Cons**

**Pros:**

- OBS Studio is free to use! It's an open source software that can be downloaded instantly from the [**OBS website.**](https://obsproject.com/ "https://obsproject.com/")
- It is for both live streaming and recording content.
- It's multiplatform, working with all major streaming platforms such as Twitch, YouTube and so on - as well as being compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac.
- Multiple encoders are available to use with OBS, including NVENC, x264 and AMD VCSE - these are related to the quality of your stream.
- Has a clear UI with a simplistic design.
- Is highly customizable, with unlimited scenes, offers seamless transitions between them, editable sources for audio and video, themes, layouts and more.
- A huge selection of plugins for audio, scenes, sources - that also work with your chosen streaming platform.
- Puts less strain on your CPU.

**Cons:**

- It is easy to use, once you know how to use it. It can be a little daunting on first installation, but there are hundreds of guides out there to get you started. With GETREKT Elements products, we supply a 1-click setup with our stream overlays and a comprehensive stream guide to help you.
- OBS doesn't come with any of its own overlays, you need to download or purchase from elsewhere and install into the software.

Overall, if you have a decent setup and rig, and want to have complete control of customization for your stream, as well as record high quality content - OBS is probably the best choice for you.

### Streamlabs

Streamlabs Desktop, known as Streamlabs, is next in line. It is also a software that we support with our 1-click install at GETREKT. Streamlabs messaging is directed to creators, with heavy emphasis on the over 1 billion dollars they have paid out to streamers since their creation. It's marketed as a creative and easy to use streaming desktop app, and it does that job.

##### Streamlabs Pros and Cons

**Pros:**

- Simple and easy to use interface
- Free, but has paid elements if you want them. The broadcasting and recording software is free and can be downloaded from the [Streamlabs website.](https://streamlabs.com/streamlabs-live-streaming-software "https://streamlabs.com/streamlabs-live-streaming-software")
- Includes stream management tools such as chat bots, Cloud Bot, widgets, music and more.
- Has a direct to OBS plugin so you can use the two software apps in tandem.
- Multistreaming support so you can stream to multiple platforms at once, such as YouTube and TikTok.
- Has integrated stream overlays and themes.
- Includes a free trial of Discord Nitro.
- Opportunities for collaboration and networking with other creators using Collab Cam.

**Cons:**

- There are less customizable features than other platforms.
- Not user friendly for old rigs, it puts a higher load on your CPU and could diminish the quality of your stream overall. Check the requirements.
- There is a paid section to Streamlabs called Ultra. The good news is, that you can gift this so it could be included in your channel goals.

If you have a higher end PC, and want something user friendly, Streamlabs would be a great choice of software for you.

![XSplit](https://getrektlabs.com/cdn/shop/files/xsplit_2.png?v=1739535969&width=1600)

### XSplit

XSplit is more of a recent contender, created to compete with the larger known streaming softwares. With a professional and modular design, it offers several different components to it's catalogue - including streaming, recording, presenting and creation.

##### XSplit Pros and Cons:

**Pros:**

- The user interface is very simple to use, and has been created with the complexities of others in mind to make it easier for creators.
- Supports all major streaming platforms.
- Offers a variety of extras:

1. Broadcaster which is for live streaming and recording.
2. VCam which is for professional use with Zoom, Teams etc and features background blurring and removal.
3. Presenter, also for professional use for presentations.
4. Capture for instant content sharing.

- Customizable options for overlays, alerts
- Is free (\*) for use and can be downloaded from the [XSplit website](https://www.xsplit.com/ "https://www.xsplit.com/").
- Supports a wide variety of plugins.
- Has multistreaming options.

**Cons:**

- We will start with an item that is a pro or con depending on your personal stance. Some of its features use AI. There are options to download older versions, but this is something to keep an eye out for if you prefer to stay away from AI.
- The (\*) in free - many features will retain a watermark unless you pay.
- Is harder on your PC and can impact quality.
- It's not as popular as the two giants that are OBS and Streamlabs.

This software could be a happy medium if you are looking for a professional and premium programme that could straddle the worlds of content creation and corporate working

![Nvidia Shadowplay](https://getrektlabs.com/cdn/shop/files/nvidia_3.png?v=1739535964&width=1600)

### Nvidia Shadowplay

In November 2024, Nvidia launched their Nvidia App - a new interface to replace GeForce Experience. The app itself is sleeker, easier to use, more intuitive, and all in all, is an upgrade from the old. However, it is still very early days of the venture into streaming for the worldwide figure.

##### Pros and Cons of the Nvidia Broadcasting App

**Pros:**

- Brand new streamers, this might be the one for you. With an extremely simple UI, in a recognizable app that you use almost daily, it is very easy to navigate.
- From setup to streaming takes seconds, you can be recording or going live in as little as two buttons.
- Greenscreen is built into the camera software to instantly remove or blur backgrounds.
- Has eye and camera tracking software that can (scarily) keep your eye contact on screen, and follow your movement in and out of frame.
- Everything from picture, to lighting, to sound is rendered at a high quality automatically.
- Puts very little strain on your PC as it uses a dedicated encoder.

**Cons:**

- Again, could be a pro or con - a lot of their features are AI based.
- Customization and advanced customization is very limited at this time for overlays, scenes, audio and so on.
- Source mixing is not supported.
- Only for NVIDIA GPUs.

If you are a casual streamer, or are not looking for a lot of features, or want something very simple to use, and you have an NVIDIA GPU - the [NVIDIA Broadcast App](https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/broadcasting/broadcast-app/ "https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/broadcasting/broadcast-app/") might be good for you.

![Restream](https://getrektlabs.com/cdn/shop/files/restream.png?v=1739799168&width=1600)

### Restream

Restream has now launched their Restream Studio! With no download of the software needed, Restream works in browser whilst still allowing you to stream in high quality and has compatibility with over 30 live streaming platforms.

##### Pros and Cons of Restream

**Pros:**

- No download - works in browser.
- Cloud based service that means no heavy load on your CPU.
- Set up for multistreaming so that you can go live on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and more at the same time.
- Its chat function allows you to pull chats from multiple platforms into one place.
- The Restream multistream plugin can be used with multiple other software platforms as easily as selecting your destination as Restream in the software.
- Has a backup for streaming if your live stream cuts out, as well as giving you the ability to broadcast prerecorded content.
- Also has an option for you to be able to schedule your streams.
- Simplistic UI with little set up.

**Cons:**

- It is free, to a point. There are a host of unlocks granted with the paid version. In the free version, there are Restream watermarks, limited multistreaming options and less customization options.
- The paid version comes with overlays and branding tools - it is far more limited in the free version.
- A browser-based platform can mean that there could be possible latency issues and quality issues depending on your internet provider.

If you are looking for a platform that can either work independently, or that you can add in to your existing streaming software, and you don't mind paid features - [Restream](https://restream.io/ "https://restream.io/") Studio or the Restream plugin could work for you.

![Meld](https://getrektlabs.com/cdn/shop/files/meld.png?v=1739792674&width=1600)

### Meld

Meld, or Meld Studio, is one of the newer software platforms that has emerged as a potential alternative to the long time front runners. With an intuitive UI that is easy to use and many advanced features, it's one to keep an eye on.

##### Pros and Cons of Meld

**Pros:**

- Meld have developed their UI by designing it for streamers, meaning it is easy to use whether you have just started streaming or are a veteran. Many of its working parts are drag and drop, including the scene editor.

- Meld offers an OBS Importer, meaning you can simply and easier transfer your OBS setup to Meld
- Advanced control of audio, visual effects, multistreaming and more.
- Light on CPU usage, so suitable for older setups.
- Free and no watermarks!

**Cons:**

- It's early days! The platform has been well received, but at the moment some features are lacking.
- Less plugin support currently
- Less support available - not necessarily a bad thing as small teams do amazing things - but currently there are fewer resources and guides for the platform.

[Meld](https://meldstudio.co/ "https://meldstudio.co/") is a newer software choice for those who want to move to something made with creators and streamers in mind. Whilst it is new, it is also completely free and definitely one to watch.
