That earlier version has become increasingly outdated over the past few years, yet it continues to attract a surprising amount of views. Because the e-ink tablet market has evolved considerably since then, I felt it was time to revisit the subject and produce a more relevant guide for 2026. When I wrote the original article, reMarkable’s product line was far simpler. The company effectively offered a single device, [the reMarkable 2](https://ewritable.net/brands/remarkable/tablets/remarkable-2/), which had itself replaced the original reMarkable tablet. Since then, the landscape has changed significantly. We have seen the arrival of the [reMarkable Paper Pro](https://ewritable.net/brands/remarkable/tablets/remarkable-paper-pro/), the more portable [reMarkable Paper Pro Move](https://ewritable.net/brands/remarkable/tablets/remarkable-paper-pro-move/), and the recently announced [reMarkable Paper Pure](https://ewritable.net/brands/remarkable/tablets/remarkable-paper-pure/). As a result, comparing reMarkable tablets with their competitors has become a far more nuanced exercise than it once was. With the apparent transition away from the ageing reMarkable 2, I have divided this article into three distinct sections. The first examines alternatives to the monochrome reMarkable 2 and reMarkable Paper Pure. The second focuses on alternatives to the larger colour-screened reMarkable Paper Pro. Finally, the third explores competing devices that occupy a similar niche to the more compact reMarkable Paper Pro Move. The motivation for writing this article remains much the same as it was three years ago. reMarkable’s marketing has long promoted the idea that its products occupy a category of their own and cannot be meaningfully compared with other products. To a certain extent, there is some truth in that assertion. reMarkable has cultivated a distinctive identity, and there are certain aspects of the ecosystem that are genuinely unique. However, after spending years reviewing and using a plethora of e-ink writing tablets from virtually every major manufacturer, I know that reMarkable does not exist in isolation. For reading, note taking, document annotation and general productivity, there are numerous competing devices that deserve serious consideration. In some respects, several of these alternatives may even represent a better choice, depending on an individual’s requirements. Of course, “_better_” is inherently subjective. The ideal device for a university student marking up academic papers may not be the ideal device for an executive taking meeting notes, and neither may suit somebody whose primary interest is reading ebooks. My objective is therefore not to declare a universal winner, but rather to present the strengths and weaknesses of each platform so that prospective buyers can make an informed decision. There is much to admire about reMarkable tablets. The industrial design is typically elegant and premium in appearance. The software interface is clean, uncluttered and approachable, with a level of simplicity that many competing manufacturers struggle to achieve. There is also disk-level encryption and a small suite of enterprise tools. For users who value minimalism and freedom from distractions, reMarkable continues to offer one of the most refined experiences available. At the same time, the platform is not without shortcomings. In my experience, performance can become strained when working with particularly large PDF documents. The native reading application is also surprisingly limited when compared with the software offered by most competing e-ink manufacturers. Features that have become commonplace elsewhere, such as text highlighting/extraction and extensive document customisation are either absent or implemented in a comparatively basic manner. There is also the question of ownership costs. While reMarkable devices are already positioned at the premium end of the market, certain software features remain tied to the Connect subscription service. Whether those features justify the ongoing expense will depend on individual circumstances, but it is nevertheless a factor that prospective buyers should consider when comparing the total cost of ownership against competing devices. In the sections that follow, I will examine both the advantages and disadvantages of reMarkable’s current product range and compare them with several noteworthy alternatives. Rather than focusing solely on specifications or marketing claims, I will draw upon extensive hands-on experience with these devices to highlight how they perform in real-world use. My hope is that this will help readers identify not only which tablet is the most capable, but which tablet is the most appropriate for their own particular needs. ## Alternatives to the reMarkable 2 and reMarkable Paper Pure First, let us discuss alternatives to the reMarkable 2 and reMarkable Paper Pure. I have grouped these devices together because they are fundamentally very similar products. Suffice it to say that the discussion is considerably more nuanced than simply declaring one approach superior to another. Both options have distinct strengths and weaknesses, which is why manufacturers such as reMarkable offer multiple products aimed at different users. The plastic chassis and flexible screen construction make it remarkably lightweight whilst also providing a reassuring degree of durability. It feels more like a traditional notebook or journal that can be casually thrown into a rucksack than a delicate piece of consumer electronics that requires constant protection. Unlike reMarkable, there are no subscription fees or software features hidden behind a paywall, which immediately reduces the long-term cost of ownership. There is also less reliance on online services, with pretty much all features still being accessible when disconnected to the Internet. The software is heavily focused on note taking, organisation and information management. Features such as text extraction from PDFs and ebooks, an integrated calendar, a built-in to-do list and various productivity tools create a cohesive ecosystem designed around capturing and managing information. I am also particularly fond of the writing experience, which remains one of the most tactile and satisfying available on any E Ink device. That said, Supernote is not without compromises. The native note taking application offers fewer pen styles and artistic tools than reMarkable. For users whose primary focus is sketching, illustration or creative work, reMarkable may offer greater flexibility. However, Supernote does have a dedicated drawing application which contains significantly more drawing tools than those available on reMarkable devices. I also believe the reMarkable 2 has the advantage when it comes to typing (not the reMarkable Paper Pure because it doesn’t yet have a keyboard accessory). Whilst I consider the reMarkable 2 (and Paper Pro) Keyboard Folios to be expensive, they are exceptionally well designed, highly responsive and genuinely pleasant to use. Supernote currently does not offer an equivalent keyboard folio. Third-party Bluetooth keyboards can be connected, but in my experience there is a slight delay between pressing a key and seeing the character appear on screen. This means users can install third-party applications directly onto the device, dramatically expanding its capabilities beyond reading and note taking. The ability to run Android applications can be extremely useful, although it should be remembered that not every app performs well on an E Ink display. Many applications are designed with high refresh rate LCD and OLED screens in mind. Nevertheless, BOOX provides extensive controls for adjusting refresh rates, display modes and optimisation settings, making it more likely that third-party applications will remain usable compared with many competing E Ink brands. BOOX devices also tend to feature comparatively more powerful hardware specifications. Faster processors and increased memory help reduce bottlenecks and contribute to a generally responsive experience. Like Supernote, there is no ongoing subscription requirement, and most features work offline. The native reading and note taking applications are among the most comprehensive in the industry. The trade-off is complexity. Whilst reMarkable prioritises simplicity and minimalism, BOOX prioritises functionality. The result is a much steeper learning curve and a user interface that can occasionally feel overwhelming. I should also note that there are now two generations of the Go 10.3. If I am being completely honest, [I personally prefer the original version](https://ewritable.net/brands/boox/tablets/boox-go-10-3/). The first-generation model uses an EMR stylus and delivers a superior writing experience in my opinion. I also find that the firmware supplied with the original device exhibits less ghosting than the software currently found on newer models, although this is something BOOX could potentially improve through future firmware updates. The first-generation device is also often available at attractive prices on the second-hand market. The second-generation model does not offer a poor writing experience by any means, but I do not find it quite as satisfying. Much of this comes down to BOOX’s decision to move away from EMR technology in favour of an active stylus system. However, there is a trade-off. Being an older product, the original model is likely to receive software updates for a shorter period. To complicate matters further, there are two versions of the second-generation Go 10.3: the [Lumi](https://ewritable.net/brands/boox/tablets/boox-go-10-3-gen-2-lumi/) and the [non-Lumi](https://ewritable.net/brands/boox/tablets/boox-go-10-3/). The Lumi incorporates a front light and is a perfectly reasonable choice for users who regularly read in dim environments. However, it offers fewer options for configuring refresh rates and display behaviour, which means users have less control over how third-party applications appear and perform on the E Ink display. Both the note taking and reading applications are well implemented, but where the AI Paper truly distinguishes itself is through its AI services and calendaring tools. Users can employ artificial intelligence features to generate summaries, meeting minutes and other forms of processed content from their notebooks – you can even create your own custom commands, such as “_Generate and email to my manager based on my notes_” or “_Translate this page of handwriting into Spanish_“. Audio recordings can also be captured directly within notes and automatically transcribed into text. One area where I believe the device excels is its scheduling and planning functionality. The daily planner integrates closely with the rest of the operating system, including the note taking application, creating a cohesive productivity experience. Another notable advantage is the pace of software development. Viwoods has been introducing meaningful updates at a remarkably rapid rate, with new features arriving every few months. ### Other Alternatives Worth Considering The [Supernote Manta](https://ewritable.net/brands/ratta-supernote/tablets/supernote-a5-x2/), [BOOX Go 10.3](https://ewritable.net/brands/boox/tablets/boox-go-10-3-gen-2/) and [Viwoods AI Paper](https://ewritable.net/brands/viwoods/tablets/viwoods-ai-paper/) are the three monochrome 10.3-inch E Ink tablets that I would most readily recommend as alternatives to the reMarkable 2 or Paper Pure. However, there are several additional devices that may also warrant consideration. The [iFLYTEK AINote 2](https://ewritable.net/brands/iflytek/tablets/ainote-2/) and [Penstar eNote 2](https://ewritable.net/brands/penstar/tablets/penstar-enote2/) both feature particularly bright, white displays, resulting in excellent contrast between text and background. The iFLYTEK offers several advanced productivity features, including AI summaries, voice transcription and foreign language voice translation. It is also available with a well-designed keyboard folio that provides a pleasant typing experience. The Penstar eNote 2 takes a more unusual approach. It lacks touchscreen functionality entirely, meaning all interaction is performed using either the stylus or the physical navigation controls. This requires a brief period of adjustment, but there are some genuine advantages. Because the screen does not respond to finger touches, it is impossible to accidentally trigger actions whilst holding the device or resting a hand on the display. The reMarkable Paper Pro (and Paper Pro Move) use a technology called **Gallery 3**, whereas the vast majority of competing colour E Ink devices utilise **Kaleido 3**. The most obvious advantage of Gallery 3 is image quality. It supports a wider colour gamut and higher colour resolution, resulting in images that appear more vibrant and detailed. Photographs in particular tend to look noticeably better on Gallery 3 displays, with less graininess and improved colour reproduction. That said, it is important to keep expectations realistic. Like all current colour E Ink technologies, Gallery 3 remains substantially less vibrant and less luminous than a conventional LCD or OLED display. The primary drawback of Gallery 3 relates to refresh behaviour. The screen requires considerably more frequent refresh cycles, resulting in increased flashing and flickering during use. This is particularly noticeable when writing or drawing in colour. For example, when creating a coloured pen stroke, the line initially appears in black before the intended colour fills in a fraction of a second later. Likewise, lifting the stylus from the screen after making coloured marks often triggers a visible refresh of the affected area. Kaleido 3 takes a different approach. Whilst it offers fewer colours and lower colour resolution, it generally requires fewer screen refreshes and therefore exhibits less flashing and flickering. The trade-off is that Kaleido displays are inherently darker than their monochrome counterparts, which often necessitates more frequent use of the front light. Personally, I tend to prefer Kaleido 3 because I rarely require high-quality image rendering and I find the reduced screen flashing more pleasant during day-to-day use. However, this is very much a matter of personal preference and will depend heavily upon how the device is intended to be used. This is a large 13.3-inch colour E Ink tablet, giving it a screen size roughly comparable to a sheet of A4 paper. As a result, it offers a bit more screen real estate than the reMarkable Paper Pro, making it particularly attractive for viewing large documents, PDFs and technical material. It also benefits from all of the advantages associated with the BOOX ecosystem. The reading and note taking applications are substantially more comprehensive than those found on reMarkable devices, and the Android operating system allows users to install third-party applications through the Google Play Store. The main drawback, at least for me, is the writing feel. Whilst perfectly usable, I find the screen somewhat smooth and slippery with very little tactile resistance or texture. The writing experience is very good and, in my opinion, superior to both the Tab XC and the reMarkable Paper Pro. Much of this is attributable to the use of EMR pen technology, which provides a more natural and precise writing feel (rather than the Active Pens utilised by the Tab XC and rMPP). **Sidenote**: [I discuss the different stylus technologies here](https://ewritable.net/guides/e-ink-tablet-stylus-input-technologies/). Like the Tab XC, the Note Air5 C runs Android and supports third-party applications, giving it a degree of versatility that reMarkable simply cannot match. If I were personally choosing between these devices today, the Note Air 5 C would probably be my preference. Whilst it sacrifices some screen size, it compensates with excellent software, strong performance, decent writing experience, and exceptional flexibility. ### Other Options Worth Considering There are also several second-tier alternatives that may be worth investigating depending on your individual requirements. The first is the [Bigme B10](https://ewritable.net/brands/bigme/tablets/bigme-b10/). In many respects, the B10 is extremely similar to the BOOX Note Air 5 C. However, I generally find the native note taking and reading applications on BOOX devices to be more refined and feature-rich. Given that Bigme devices often occupy a similar price bracket, and are occasionally even more expensive, I usually struggle to identify a compelling reason to choose Bigme over BOOX. One area where Bigme may potentially have an advantage is in the running of third-party Android applications, although I have not yet conducted sufficiently rigorous testing to draw any firm conclusions. Another colour device that may attract attention is the [Kindle Scribe Colorsoft](https://ewritable.net/brands/kindle/tablets/kindle-scribe-colorsoft/), which was introduced towards the end of 2025. At the time of writing, I have not yet spent sufficient time with the device to offer a comprehensive assessment. However, based upon my experience with previous Kindle products, I would expect the hardware to be well designed and the reading experience to be highly polished. Amazon’s reading software has traditionally been one of its strongest assets. The ability to write directly between paragraphs of text, add handwritten annotations in margins and seamlessly integrate notes into the reading experience makes Kindle devices particularly appealing for users who primarily read and annotate ebooks. The principal drawback is the ecosystem itself. Kindle devices are among the most closed platforms in the E Ink market. Whilst this creates a streamlined user experience, it also encourages users to become deeply invested in Amazon’s ecosystem. For some people this will not matter, but for others it may become problematic if they later decide to migrate to a different platform and wish to retain access to their purchased content. Ultimately, the reMarkable Paper Pro occupies a relatively unique position within the colour E Ink market because of its Gallery 3 display technology. However, it is by no means without competition. However, I should be clear that I primarily use it as a reading device rather than as a notetaking device. One of the reasons for this is the stylus implementation. Whilst the Palma 2 Pro supports handwriting, neither the device nor the official folio provides a particularly elegant method of storing the stylus. This means that you must remember to carry the pen separately. The reMarkable Paper Pro Move handles this considerably better. The stylus attaches magnetically to the side of the device and the folio incorporates a retaining flap that helps keep everything securely in place during transport. The major advantages of the Palma 2 Pro are its size and versatility. Unlike reMarkable’s operating system, the BOOX platform runs Android and includes access to the Google Play Store. This allows users to install third-party applications, significantly expanding what the device can do. In my own case, I use it for reading ebooks, studying Latin through language learning applications, browsing the web, checking email and occasionally completing puzzles such as those offered by The New York Times. The ability to install whatever software I need is something I find genuinely useful ([I wrote about how the Palm quietly infiltrated my life here](https://ewritable.net/how-the-boox-palma-2-pro-quietly-became-part-of-my-daily-life/)). Although handwriting is supported, I do not find the writing experience quite as satisfying as that offered by the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. The screen surface is smoother and provides less tactile feedback when writing. Where the Palma excels is portability. Whilst the Paper Pro Move is certainly compact compared with most E Ink tablets, I would not consider it genuinely trouser-pocket-sized. In practice it feels more suited to a larger coat pocket, small bag or handbag. The Palma 2 Pro, by contrast, slips comfortably into a trouser pocket. It is small enough to carry virtually everywhere without giving it a second thought. For me, this has proven to be one of its greatest strengths. ### Other Portable Alternatives There are currently very few palm-sized colour E Ink devices with handwriting capabilities available on the market. However, there are several slightly larger devices that may still be worth considering if portability is a priority. BOOX and Bigme both offer colour E Ink tablets with displays of approximately 7.8 inches. Whilst these are considerably larger than the Palma 2 Pro, they remain compact enough to fit easily into a small bag and are substantially more portable than most 10.3-inch and 13.3-inch tablets. These devices utilise the same software ecosystems discussed earlier in this article and therefore inherit many of the same strengths and weaknesses. BOOX offers excellent note taking and reading applications, extensive display customisation options and access to Android applications. Bigme offers a broadly similar proposition, although I generally find BOOX software to be more refined. That said, many of these 7.8-inch colour devices are now beginning to show their age and may be approaching replacement by newer models. ### Monochrome Alternatives If colour is not an essential requirement, several additional options become available. The [Viwoods AI Paper Mini](https://ewritable.net/brands/viwoods/tablets/viwoods-ai-paper-mini/) features an 8.2-inch display and runs the same software platform as the larger AI Paper discussed earlier. As a result, it benefits from the same productivity tools, artificial intelligence features and close integration between the scheduling and note taking applications. Unlike its larger sibling, the AI Paper Mini also includes a front light, which may be advantageous for users who frequently read in dimly lit environments. Another device worth considering is the [Supernote Nomad](https://ewritable.net/brands/ratta-supernote/tablets/supernote-a6-x2-nomad/). This can essentially be viewed as a smaller counterpart to the Supernote Manta and therefore benefits from the same excellent note taking system, organisational features and information management tools. Like the Manta, it uses a monochrome display and does not include a front light. However, for users whose primary focus is handwriting rather than colour content, it remains one of the strongest portable note taking devices currently available. ## Final Verdict I hope this article has highlighted some of the alternatives available to those considering a reMarkable paper tablet. Personally, I genuinely like reMarkable devices. Their hardware is attractive, the software is clean and minimalist, and the overall user experience is remarkably approachable. However, being tied to a relatively closed ecosystem, combined with the presence of subscription-based features, is something that has always made me hesitant. That is not necessarily a criticism. Rather, I think reMarkable devices are designed for a very specific type of user. They are ideal for people who appreciate simplicity, are comfortable working within the boundaries of a carefully curated ecosystem, and would rather spend their time using a device than configuring it. For users who want extensive customisation, greater flexibility, or the freedom to build their own workflows, reMarkable is often not the best fit. Likewise, users who dislike being tied to a particular ecosystem may find some of the platform’s limitations frustrating. The benefit of this approach is that reMarkable’s software remains exceptionally clean and easy to navigate. There is very little clutter and very little complexity. In most cases, users can learn how to perform a task once and then simply get on with their work with minimal friction. At the opposite end of the spectrum are BOOX devices. BOOX offers a vast array of configuration options, software features and customisation possibilities. This inevitably creates a much steeper learning curve, but it also provides significantly greater flexibility. The ability to install third-party Android applications dramatically expands what the device can do and allows users to adapt the tablet to their own workflow rather than adapting their workflow to the tablet. Bigme devices occupy a broadly similar position within the market. They offer considerable flexibility and versatility, although in my experience their software ecosystem is not quite as refined as that offered by BOOX. Most other E Ink tablet manufacturers fall somewhere between these two extremes. Amazon’s Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is perhaps one of the closest competitors to reMarkable in terms of philosophy. Like reMarkable, it operates within a highly controlled ecosystem and prioritises simplicity over complexity. However, the strengths of the two platforms differ. In my opinion, reMarkable offers the stronger note-taking environment, whereas Kindle excels as a reading platform. In particular, Amazon’s implementation of handwritten annotations within ebooks remains one of the most compelling reading experiences available on an E Ink device. For me personally, Supernote devices strike perhaps the most effective balance between simplicity and capability. The software is extremely powerful, yet remains intuitive and easy to use. The platform offers sophisticated note-taking and organisational tools without overwhelming the user with endless configuration menus and settings. Devices from manufacturers such as Viwoods, iFLYTEK and Penstar occupy a middle ground. They offer considerably more flexibility than reMarkable thanks to their support for third-party applications, whilst generally remaining less complex than BOOX. Viwoods in particular has impressed me with the quality of its native software, especially the note-taking application, reading application and scheduling tools. That said, these platforms typically provide fewer controls for optimising third-party applications than BOOX and Bigme. For many users this will not matter, but for those who enjoy fine-tuning refresh behaviour and display settings, it is something worth considering. As I mentioned earlier in this article, my own daily driver is the Supernote Manta. It is the one E Ink device that I genuinely would not want to be without. The combination of excellent note-taking tools, thoughtful organisational features and a highly practical design makes it my constant companion. My second most-used device is the BOOX Palma 2 Pro. However, I primarily use it as a reading device rather than a note-taking device. In fact, when I do capture information on the Palma, it is often through voice notes that are subsequently converted into text rather than through handwriting. This is largely because I rarely have the stylus with me, and the Supernote pen is unfortunately incompatible. When I am studying, I often switch to a Boox tablet (often the Note Air5 C, but sometimes the larger Note Max or Tab XC). The versatility of the Android operating system provides several advantages that are particularly useful for academic work. I can install scientific calculator applications, interpret colour diagrams more effectively than on a monochrome display, and capture screenshots from textbooks directly into my notebooks for annotation. I also make frequent use of split-screen functionality, allowing me to view a textbook on one side of the display whilst taking notes on the other. These are workflows that would be difficult, and in some cases impossible, to replicate on many competing platforms. Of course, my own preferences and workflows may be entirely different from yours. There is no single E Ink tablet that is objectively best for everyone. Each platform has its own strengths, weaknesses and design philosophy. My aim with this article has not been to persuade anybody away from reMarkable. Rather, it has been to demonstrate that there are numerous alternatives available, each with its own advantages and compromises. Hopefully this overview has provided enough context to help you identify which ecosystem aligns most closely with your own needs and working style.
