**UpScrolled** is an Australian [social media platform](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media_platform "Social media platform") for [microblogging](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microblogging "Microblogging") and [short-form](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short-form_content "Short-form content") [online video](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_video_platform "Online video platform") sharing that was launched in June 2025 by Recursive Methods Pty Ltd. It was founded by **Issam Hijazi**.

## History

UpScrolled was launched in June 2025 by Recursive Methods Pty Ltd.[\[2\]](#cite_note-2)[\[3\]](#cite_note-Murray-2026-3) It was founded by Issam Hijazi, a [Palestinian-Australian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_Australians "Palestinian Australians") app developer.[\[3\]](#cite_note-Murray-2026-3)[\[4\]](#cite_note-Malik-2026-4) UpScrolled is backed by the [Tech for Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tech_for_Palestine "Tech for Palestine") incubator.[\[5\]](#cite_note-Chandran-2026-5)

In January 2026, UpScrolled saw increased attention and number of downloads after the acquisition of [TikTok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TikTok "TikTok") by a group of pro-[Donald Trump](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump "Donald Trump") US investors, including [Larry Ellison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Ellison "Larry Ellison"), which led to calls to boycott TikTok and migrate to other apps.[\[6\]](#cite_note-Cuthbertson-2026-6)[\[4\]](#cite_note-Malik-2026-4) TikTok was alleged to be suppressing pro-Palestinian content, as well as news surrounding the [killing of Alex Pretti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Alex_Pretti "Killing of Alex Pretti") in [Minneapolis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minneapolis "Minneapolis") on the platform.[\[5\]](#cite_note-Chandran-2026-5) UpScrolled subsequently climbed to the top 10 of [Apple](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc. "Apple Inc.")'s [App Store](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App_store "App store") list of free apps.[\[6\]](#cite_note-Cuthbertson-2026-6)

The app saw a reported 2,850% increase in downloads between 22 and 24 January 2026.[\[4\]](#cite_note-Malik-2026-4) As of 27 January 2026, UpScrolled "had been downloaded about 400,000 times in the US and 700,000 globally since launching in June 2025".[\[7\]](#cite_note-7) The app became the most downloaded app in the Apple App store on 29 January 2026, following allegations that TikTok was suppressing videos and content opposed to [Immigration and Customs Enforcement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_and_Customs_Enforcement "Immigration and Customs Enforcement") (ICE) under its new ownership.[\[8\]](#cite_note-Al_Jazeera-8)[\[3\]](#cite_note-Murray-2026-3)

By 2 February 2026, UpScrolled had reached 2.5 million users. According to the [Google Play Store](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Play_Store "Google Play Store") and the Apple App Store, it has become the most downloaded social media app in the United States and Canada, with rising interest in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.[\[9\]](#cite_note-Desmarais-2026-9) On 14 February, UpScrolled was suspended from the Google Play Store; the suspension was reverted by 15 February.[\[10\]](#cite_note-10)

## Founder

Hijazi was born in [Jordan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan "Jordan").[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11) His parents and grandparents are from [Safad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safed "Safed"), a northern Israeli city near the Lebanese border.[\[9\]](#cite_note-Desmarais-2026-9) He worked for [IBM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM "IBM") and [Oracle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Corporation "Oracle Corporation") prior to starting UpScrolled.[\[3\]](#cite_note-Murray-2026-3)[\[4\]](#cite_note-Malik-2026-4)

Hijazi told _[Rest of World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_of_World "Rest of World")_ that he launched UpScrolled in response to Israel's [genocide in Gaza](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_genocide "Gaza genocide") which followed the [October 7 attacks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_7_attacks "October 7 attacks"). He said, "I couldn't take it anymore. I lost family members in Gaza, and I didn't want to be [complicit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complicity_in_genocide "Complicity in genocide"). So I was like, I'm done with this, I want to feel useful. I found this gap in the market, with a lot of people asking why there is no alternative to the [Big Tech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Tech "Big Tech") platforms for their content, which was getting censored."[\[5\]](#cite_note-Chandran-2026-5) Hijazi also alleges that social media accounts that were posting pro-Palestinian content were getting [shadow banned](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_banning "Shadow banning") on larger platforms, and alleges that even his account was not exempt from being targeted by censors.[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11) Hijazi has further elaborated on the importance of social media independence to further the Palestinian cause.[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11)

In January 2026, [Web Summit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Summit "Web Summit") Qatar announced that Hijazi would be an opening night speaker. Following the announcement, there was a surge in ticket sales for the summit.[\[12\]](#cite_note-12)

Hijazi lives in [Sydney](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney "Sydney") with his wife and daughter.[\[1\]](#cite_note-Wired-1) He lost 60 family members during the [Gaza war](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_war "Gaza war").[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11)

## Features

UpScrolled's algorithm allows users to discover posts based on [likes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Like_button "Like button"), comments, and shares with time decay and some randomness, all chronologically, with "no manipulation" according to the app's website.[\[3\]](#cite_note-Murray-2026-3) UpScrolled has an interface resembling a mix of [Instagram](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instagram "Instagram") and [Twitter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter "Twitter"), allowing users to post and view text posts, photos, and videos. It also lets users send [private messages](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_message "Private message") to each other.[\[13\]](#cite_note-13) The app is currently available for [iOS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS "IOS") and [Android](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_\(operating_system\) "Android (operating system)") devices, with plans to upscale.[\[4\]](#cite_note-Malik-2026-4)

UpScrolled does not include [Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel "Israel") as an option in its location selection menu. Cities such as [Tel Aviv](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tel_Aviv "Tel Aviv") are included under "[Occupied Territories of Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli-occupied_territories "Israeli-occupied territories")", and [Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine "Palestine") can also be set as the location.[\[14\]](#cite_note-14)

UpScrolled says that it is against [censorship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship "Censorship") and [shadow banning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_banning "Shadow banning"), and describes itself as "belong\[ing\] to the people who use it — not to hidden algorithms or outside agendas".[\[15\]](#cite_note-Chavez-2026-15)[\[5\]](#cite_note-Chandran-2026-5) Hijazi said, "The other platforms claim to be [free speech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_speech "Free speech") platforms. But when it comes to [anything on Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine_exception "Palestine exception"), that's a different story."[\[5\]](#cite_note-Chandran-2026-5) UpScrolled states that it "does not tolerate [hate speech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech "Hate speech"), [propaganda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda "Propaganda"), or [bad-faith](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_faith "Bad faith") behaviour, but it also refuses to silence voices quietly or without explanation".[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11)

## User base and content

[Al Jazeera](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Jazeera_Media_Network "Al Jazeera Media Network") reported that posts expressing pro-Palestinian sentiment or depicting the [continued suffering in the Gaza Strip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_humanitarian_crisis "Gaza humanitarian crisis") were "flooding" the app.[\[8\]](#cite_note-Al_Jazeera-8) Political and global issues such as the [Gaza war](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_war "Gaza war") are prominent. Content includes updates from the [Gaza Freedom Flotilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Freedom_Flotilla "Gaza Freedom Flotilla"), posts by doctors working in [Gaza](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Strip "Gaza Strip"), video essays about [Palantir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir "Palantir")’s influence within the military and calls for [boycotts of Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boycott,_Divestment_and_Sanctions "Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions"). It has been used by [Gazans](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazans "Gazans") to [crowdfund](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdfund "Crowdfund") and record daily life.[\[16\]](#cite_note-Franzini-2026-16) Celebrity users of UpScrolled include American labour activist [Chris Smalls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Smalls "Chris Smalls") and actor Jacob Berger, both of whom were on the [July 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_2025_Gaza_Freedom_Flotilla "July 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla").[\[8\]](#cite_note-Al_Jazeera-8)[\[17\]](#cite_note-17) Political figures have also joined UpScrolled, such as South African politician and [Economic Freedom Fighters](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Freedom_Fighters "Economic Freedom Fighters") leader [Julius Malema](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Malema "Julius Malema"),[\[18\]](#cite_note-18) and [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Revolutionary_Guard_Corps "Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps") commander [Esmail Qaani](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esmail_Qaani "Esmail Qaani").[\[19\]](#cite_note-19) One user said that most early users were attracted to the platform for the opportunity to [criticize Zionism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Zionism "Anti-Zionism").[\[16\]](#cite_note-Franzini-2026-16)

The [Jewish Telegraphic Agency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Telegraphic_Agency "Jewish Telegraphic Agency") (JTA) reported that UpScrolled was observed to be "flooded" with [antisemitic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitic "Antisemitic") and [anti-Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Israel "Anti-Israel") content, including [Holocaust denial](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocaust_denial "Holocaust denial") and accusations that [Israel carried out the 9/11 attacks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_conspiracy_theories#Israel "9/11 conspiracy theories").[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11) In a statement, UpScrolled said, "Our [content moderation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_moderation "Content moderation") hasn't been able to keep up with the massive rise of users this week. We're working with digital rights experts to grow our Trust & Safety team and are beefing up our content moderation to prevent this. We apologise to all impacted users, thank you for being part of Upscrolled."[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11)

_[The Times](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Times "The Times")_ reported in February 2026 that UpScrolled was hosting content that could potentially breach UK law, including antisemitic content and posts promoting [Hamas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas "Hamas"), [Hezbollah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah "Hezbollah"), [Islamic State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State "Islamic State") and [Al-Qaeda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Qaeda "Al-Qaeda"), as well as footage of the 2019 [Christchurch mosque shootings](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christchurch_mosque_shootings "Christchurch mosque shootings") and content praising the perpetrators of the 2019 [Halle synagogue shooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halle_synagogue_shooting "Halle synagogue shooting") and 2018 [Pittsburgh synagogue shooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_synagogue_shooting "Pittsburgh synagogue shooting").[\[20\]](#cite_note-:0-20) Antisemitic influencers [Lucas Gage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_Gage "Lucas Gage"), [Jake Shields](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Shields "Jake Shields"), [Stew Peters](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stew_Peters "Stew Peters") and [Anastasia Maria Loupis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anastasia_Maria_Loupis "Anastasia Maria Loupis") have accounts on UpScrolled. UpScrolled’s policies prohibit threats, glorification of harm or support for terrorist or violent groups. Hijazi said harmful content was being uploaded to UpScrolled and the company had expanded its content moderation team and upgraded its technology infrastructure to deal with the issue.[\[20\]](#cite_note-:0-20) In May 2026, _[Moment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_\(magazine\) "Moment (magazine)")_ magazine said that users had identified some antisemitic content, pornography and extremist videos on the platform. The magazine said there were gaps in content moderation due to the small size of the developer team.[\[16\]](#cite_note-Franzini-2026-16)

## Reception

In January 2026, the [Council on American–Islamic Relations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_on_American%E2%80%93Islamic_Relations "Council on American–Islamic Relations") (CAIR) praised UpScrolled for "pledging to protect the free flow of ideas on its platform, including both support for and opposition to the [Israeli government's human rights abuses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Israel "Human rights in Israel")."[\[21\]](#cite_note-21) [Guy Christensen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Christensen "Guy Christensen"), a pro-Palestinian social media celebrity, has encouraged his audience to download UpScrolled. Christensen characterized UpScrolled as having "no censorship, no ownership by billionaires who put their interests and biases onto you to control you".[\[11\]](#cite_note-Gilson-2026-11) He compared the platform to others like TikTok, saying that Israel is behind censorship that wouldn't happen on UpScrolled.[\[16\]](#cite_note-Franzini-2026-16)

[Jaigris Hodson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaigris_Hodson?action=edit&redlink=1 "Jaigris Hodson (page does not exist)"), an associate professor of [Interdisciplinary Studies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interdisciplinary_Studies "Interdisciplinary Studies") at [Royal Roads University](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Roads_University "Royal Roads University") in Canada, has argued that "[Network effects](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect "Network effect") mean that unless UpScrolled continues its explosive growth, people are unlikely to continue to choose it over the more established TikTok. At best, we might see a [Twitter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter "Twitter")/X effect, which is where TikTok will host more pro-U.S. government content creators and those people who want to follow them, and UpScrolled will host more critical content creators and their followers."[\[22\]](#cite_note-22)[\[23\]](#cite_note-23)
