**Kubeflow** is an [open-source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software "Open-source software") platform for [machine learning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_learning "Machine learning") and [MLOps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLOps "MLOps") on [Kubernetes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubernetes "Kubernetes") introduced by [Google](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google "Google"). The different stages in a typical [machine learning lifecycle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLOps "MLOps") are represented with different [software components](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component-based_software_engineering "Component-based software engineering") in Kubeflow, including model development _([Kubeflow Notebooks](#Kubeflow_Notebooks)[\[4\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_notebooks-4))_, model training _([Kubeflow Pipelines](#Kubeflow_Pipelines)_,_[\[5\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_pipelines-5) [Kubeflow Training Operator](#Kubeflow_Training_Operator)[\[6\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_training_operator-6))_, model serving _([KServe](#KServe)[\[a\]](#cite_note-kserve_rename-7)[\[7\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_kserve-8))_, and [automated machine learning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_machine_learning "Automated machine learning") _([Katib](#Katib)[\[8\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_katib-9))_.

Each component of Kubeflow can be deployed separately, and it is not a requirement to deploy every component.[\[9\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_install-10)

The Kubeflow project was first announced at _[KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2017](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Native_Computing_Foundation "Cloud Native Computing Foundation")_ by [Google](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google "Google") engineers David Aronchick, Jeremy Lewi, and Vishnu Kannan[\[10\]](#cite_note-11) to address a perceived lack of flexible options for building production-ready machine learning systems.[\[11\]](#cite_note-12) The project has also stated it began as a way for Google to open-source how they ran [TensorFlow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TensorFlow "TensorFlow") internally.[\[12\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_history-13)

The first release of Kubeflow (Kubeflow 0.1) was announced at _KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2018_.[\[13\]](#cite_note-14)[\[14\]](#cite_note-15) Kubeflow 1.0 was released in March 2020 via a public blog post announcing that many Kubeflow components were graduating to a "stable status", indicating they were now ready for production usage.[\[15\]](#cite_note-16)

In October 2022, Google announced that the Kubeflow project had applied to join the [Cloud Native Computing Foundation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Native_Computing_Foundation "Cloud Native Computing Foundation").[\[16\]](#cite_note-17)[\[17\]](#cite_note-18) In July 2023, the foundation voted to accept Kubeflow as an incubating stage project.[\[18\]](#cite_note-19)[\[19\]](#cite_note-20)

### _Kubeflow Notebooks_ for model development

Machine learning models are developed in the notebooks component called _Kubeflow Notebooks_. The component runs web-based development environments inside a Kubernetes cluster, with native support for [Jupyter Notebook](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupyter_Notebook "Jupyter Notebook"), [Visual Studio Code](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_Studio_Code "Visual Studio Code"), and [RStudio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RStudio "RStudio").[\[20\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_notebooks_overview-21)

### _Kubeflow Pipelines_ for model training

Once developed, models are trained in the _Kubeflow Pipelines_ component. The component acts as a platform for building and deploying [portable](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_portability "Software portability"), scalable machine learning workflows based on Docker containers.[\[21\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_pipelines_intro-22) [Google Cloud Platform](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Cloud_Platform "Google Cloud Platform") has adopted the _Kubeflow Pipelines DSL_ within its _Vertex AI Pipelines_ product.[\[22\]](#cite_note-23)

### _Kubeflow Training Operator_ for model training

For certain machine learning models and libraries, the _Kubeflow Training Operator_ component provides [Kubernetes custom resources](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubernetes#Operators "Kubernetes") support. The component runs distributed or non-distributed [TensorFlow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TensorFlow "TensorFlow"), [PyTorch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PyTorch "PyTorch"), [Apache MXNet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_MXNet "Apache MXNet"), [XGBoost](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XGBoost "XGBoost"), and [MPI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_MPI "Open MPI") training jobs on Kubernetes.[\[6\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_training_operator-6)

### _KServe_ for model serving

The _KServe_ component (previously named KFServing[\[23\]](#cite_note-kubeflow_kserve_rename-24)) provides [Kubernetes custom resources](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubernetes#Operators "Kubernetes") for serving machine learning models on arbitrary frameworks including [TensorFlow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TensorFlow "TensorFlow"), [XGBoost](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XGBoost "XGBoost"), [scikit-learn](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scikit-learn "Scikit-learn"), [PyTorch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PyTorch "PyTorch"), and [ONNX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Neural_Network_Exchange "Open Neural Network Exchange").[\[24\]](#cite_note-25) KServe was developed collaboratively by [Google](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google "Google"), [IBM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM "IBM"), [Bloomberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomberg_L.P. Lastly, Kubeflow includes a component for [automated training and development of machine learning models](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_machine_learning "Automated machine learning"), the _Katib_ component. It is described as a Kubernetes-native project and features [hyperparameter tuning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperparameter_optimization "Hyperparameter optimization"), [early stopping](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_stopping "Early stopping"), and [neural architecture search](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neural_architecture_search "Neural architecture search").[\[29\]](#cite_note-30)
