On 9 June 2011, Henderson was transferred to [Liverpool](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C. "Liverpool F.C.") for an undisclosed fee thought to be between £16 and £20 million.[\[24\]](#cite_note-24)[\[25\]](#cite_note-25)[\[26\]](#cite_note-26)[\[27\]](#cite_note-Liverpool_complete_Jordan_Henderson_deal-27) He made his debut in Liverpool's first match of the [2011–12 Premier League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011%E2%80%9312_Premier_League "2011–12 Premier League"), a 1–1 draw against his former club Sunderland where he was given a mixed reception by Sunderland fans.[\[28\]](#cite_note-28) On 27 August 2011, Henderson scored his first goal for Liverpool in a Premier League fixture at [Anfield](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anfield "Anfield") against [Bolton Wanderers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C. "Cardiff City F.C.") before being substituted in the 58th minute.[\[30\]](#cite_note-2012leaguecupfinal-30) On 5 May, he played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool were beaten 2–1 by Chelsea in the [2012 FA Cup final](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_FA_Cup_final "2012 FA Cup final").[\[31\]](#cite_note-2012facupfinal-31) Henderson ended the [2011–12 season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011%E2%80%9312_Liverpool_F.C._season "2011–12 Liverpool F.C. season") with 2 goals from 48 appearances.[\[32\]](#cite_note-sb1112-32)

In August 2012, Henderson was told he could be signed by [Fulham](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulham_F.C. "Fulham F.C.") by new manager [Brendan Rodgers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Rodgers "Brendan Rodgers"), but this was rejected by the player.[\[33\]](#cite_note-33) He went on to score his first [European](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C._in_European_football "Liverpool F.C. in European football") goal for Liverpool on 6 December 2012, with the winner against [Udinese](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udinese_Calcio "Udinese Calcio") in the [UEFA Europa League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_UEFA_Europa_League "2012–13 UEFA Europa League") as the _Reds_ qualified for the last 32.[\[34\]](#cite_note-34)

Henderson playing for [Liverpool](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C. "Liverpool F.C.") in 2014

On 13 April 2014, he received his first career [red card](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_card_\(association_football\) "Red card (association football)") for a dangerous sliding tackle on [Samir Nasri](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samir_Nasri "Samir Nasri") in a 3–2 win over Manchester City, resulting in a three-match ban that meant he would miss three of Liverpool's last four matches;[\[37\]](#cite_note-37) without Henderson, Liverpool lost 0–2 in a home game against Chelsea and drew 3–3 with [Crystal Palace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Palace_F.C. "Crystal Palace F.C."), losing a 3–0 lead in just 15 minutes before the final whistle.[\[38\]](#cite_note-38) Failure to win any of those games meant that by the time of Henderson's return from suspension, Liverpool had already been overtaken in first place by Manchester City. On 11 May 2014, the final match day of the competition, he started in Liverpool's 2–1 home win over [Newcastle United](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_United_F.C. "Newcastle United F.C.") only to finish second as Manchester City claimed the league title in their concurrent game.[\[39\]](#cite_note-39)

Henderson started the [2014–15 season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014%E2%80%9315_Liverpool_F.C._season "2014–15 Liverpool F.C. season") in good form, providing two assists in Liverpool's first three league matches,[\[40\]](#cite_note-40) and was named as the club's [vice-captain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vice-captain_\(association_football\) "Vice-captain (association football)") following the departure of [Daniel Agger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Agger "Daniel Agger").[\[41\]](#cite_note-41) On 29 November, Henderson started as [captain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_\(association_football\) "Captain (association football)") for the first time for Liverpool in the Premier League against [Stoke City](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoke_City_F.C. "Stoke City F.C.") as [Steven Gerrard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Gerrard "Steven Gerrard") was an unused substitute.[\[42\]](#cite_note-42) On 2 December, Henderson marked his 150th appearance for the club by scoring the third goal in a 3–1 win against [Leicester City](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leicester_City_F.C. "Leicester City F.C.") to confirm the win.[\[43\]](#cite_note-43) Henderson started many Liverpool matches as captain as Gerrard was out injured or being rested on the bench.[\[44\]](#cite_note-44)[\[45\]](#cite_note-45)[\[46\]](#cite_note-46) On 23 April, Henderson signed a five-year contract extension at Liverpool worth £100,000 a week.[\[47\]](#cite_note-47)

#### 2015–2021: Club captain and further achievements

Henderson playing for Liverpool in 2020

Following the departure of Gerrard in June 2015, Henderson was made captain of Liverpool.[\[48\]](#cite_note-48) After aggravating a heel injury, Henderson underwent surgery,[\[49\]](#cite_note-49)[\[50\]](#cite_note-50) but broke a bone in his right foot before he could rejoin the starting line-up.[\[51\]](#cite_note-51) It was reported that Henderson's heel problems stemmed from the incurable condition known as [plantar fasciitis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantar_fasciitis "Plantar fasciitis").[\[52\]](#cite_note-52) The injury meant that he missed the arrival of manager [Jürgen Klopp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCrgen_Klopp "Jürgen Klopp") after Rodgers was sacked.[\[53\]](#cite_note-53)[\[54\]](#cite_note-54)[\[55\]](#cite_note-55) He returned to first-team football on 29 November 2015 against [Swansea City](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swansea_City_A.F.C. Henderson started the [2016–17 season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_Liverpool_F.C._season "2017–18 Liverpool F.C. season") with regular appearances in the starting eleven and on 16 September scored with a 25-yard shot in a 2–1 away win over Chelsea.[\[60\]](#cite_note-60) The strike earned him the [Premier League Goal of the Month](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League_Goal_of_the_Month "Premier League Goal of the Month") award for the month of September.[\[61\]](#cite_note-goalofmonth-61) Henderson ended the season with 27 appearances, scoring 1 goal.[\[62\]](#cite_note-sb1617-62) Henderson spent the [2017–18 season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_Liverpool_F.C._season "2017–18 Liverpool F.C. season") as a first-team regular, and he scored his only goal of the season on 23 September 2017, with a winner against Leicester City in a 3–2 win.[\[63\]](#cite_note-63) On 15 August 2017, Henderson captained Liverpool for the first time in the [UEFA Champions League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League "UEFA Champions League") against German team [1899 Hoffenheim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSG_1899_Hoffenheim "TSG 1899 Hoffenheim").[\[64\]](#cite_note-64) He would go on to captain Liverpool all the way to the [final](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_UEFA_Champions_League_final "2018 UEFA Champions League final"), ending up on the losing side after Liverpool were beaten 3–1 by [Real Madrid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Madrid_CF "Real Madrid CF") in [Kyiv](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyiv "Kyiv").[\[65\]](#cite_note-65) Henderson ended the 2017–18 season with 41 appearances in all competitions, scoring 1 goal.[\[66\]](#cite_note-sb1718-66)

Henderson signed a new five-year deal at Liverpool in 2018 after leading the club to its first Champions League final in over a decade.[\[67\]](#cite_note-67) After signing the contract, Henderson emphasised his intentions to remain at Liverpool for as long as possible and ideally the remainder of his career.[\[68\]](#cite_note-68) On 24 November, Henderson was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in a 3–0 win against [Watford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watford_F.C. "Watford F.C."), meaning he would miss the [Merseyside derby](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merseyside_derby "Merseyside derby") on 2 December.[\[69\]](#cite_note-69)
