**Gensim** is an [open-source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software "Open-source software") library for unsupervised [topic modeling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topic_model "Topic model"), [document indexing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_retrieval "Information retrieval"), retrieval by similarity, and other [natural language processing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_language_processing "Natural language processing") functionalities, using modern statistical [machine learning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_learning "Machine learning").

Gensim is implemented in [Python](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_\(programming_language\) "Python (programming language)") and [Cython](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cython "Cython") for performance. Gensim is designed to handle large text collections using data streaming and incremental online algorithms, which differentiates it from most other machine learning software packages that target only in-memory processing.

Gensim includes streamed parallelized implementations of [fastText](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FastText "FastText"),[\[2\]](#cite_note-2) [word2vec](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word2vec "Word2vec") and doc2vec algorithms,[\[3\]](#cite_note-3) as well as [latent semantic analysis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_semantic_analysis "Latent semantic analysis") (LSA, LSI, SVD), [non-negative matrix factorization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-negative_matrix_factorization "Non-negative matrix factorization") (NMF), [latent Dirichlet allocation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_Dirichlet_allocation "Latent Dirichlet allocation") (LDA), [tf-idf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tf-idf "Tf-idf") and [random projections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locality-sensitive_hashing "Locality-sensitive hashing").[\[4\]](#cite_note-4)

Some of the novel online algorithms in Gensim were also published in the 2011 PhD dissertation _Scalability of Semantic Analysis in Natural Language Processing_ of Radim Řehůřek, the creator of Gensim.[\[5\]](#cite_note-5)

Gensim library has been used and cited in over 1400 commercial and academic applications as of 2018,[\[6\]](#cite_note-6) in a diverse array of disciplines from medicine to insurance claim analysis to patent search.[\[7\]](#cite_note-7) The software has been covered in several new articles, podcasts and interviews.[\[8\]](#cite_note-8)[\[9\]](#cite_note-9)[\[10\]](#cite_note-10)
