**Dollar Shave Club, Inc.**[\[3\]](#cite_note-3) is an American company based in [Venice, California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice,_Los_Angeles "Venice, Los Angeles"), that delivers [razors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razors "Razors") and other [personal grooming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_grooming "Personal grooming") products to customers by mail.[\[4\]](#cite_note-Riding_the_Momentum-4) It delivers razor blades on a monthly basis and offers additional grooming products for home delivery.[\[5\]](#cite_note-LATimes-5)[\[6\]](#cite_note-adage-6)

Dollar Shave Club was founded by Mark Levine and Michael Dubin. The pair met at a party and spoke of their frustrations with the cost of razor blades. With their own money and investments from start-up incubator [Science Inc.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_Inc. "Science Inc."), they began operations in January 2011 and launched their website in April 2011.[\[7\]](#cite_note-7)[\[8\]](#cite_note-8)[\[9\]](#cite_note-Forbes-9)[\[10\]](#cite_note-10)

Dollar Shave Club (DSC) was backed by a variety of [venture capitalists](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venture_capital "Venture capital"). In March 2012, seed investors provided $1 million in funding from groups that included [Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleiner_Perkins_Caufield_&_Byers "Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers"), [Andreessen Horowitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreessen_Horowitz "Andreessen Horowitz"), [Shasta Ventures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shasta_Ventures "Shasta Ventures"), and others.[\[11\]](#cite_note-VentureBeat-11) The same group, joined by [Venrock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venrock "Venrock"), provided $9.8 million in [series A funding](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_A_round "Series A round") in October 2012.[\[12\]](#cite_note-DJ-12)

A year later, a $12 million series B round was raised led by Venrock, [Comcast Ventures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast_Ventures "Comcast Ventures"), [New World Investors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World_Investors?action=edit&redlink=1 "New World Investors (page does not exist)") and [Battery Ventures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Ventures "Battery Ventures"). Amidst the fundraising announcement, DSC announced it would be expanding its product line to include a dozen other men's products in 2014.[\[13\]](#cite_note-FC-13)

On July 19, 2016, one year after securing $75 million in series D funding,[\[14\]](#cite_note-2_million_subscribers-14) DSC was acquired by [Unilever](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever "Unilever") for a reported $1 billion in cash.[\[15\]](#cite_note-15) On October 26, 2023, Unilever announced that it had sold a majority stake in the company to Nexus Capital Management, LP,[\[16\]](#cite_note-16) while still retaining 35% of Dollar Shave Club.[\[17\]](#cite_note-17)

In February 2025, Dollar Shave Club announced that it would relocate its headquarters from Los Angeles to [Durham, North Carolina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham,_North_Carolina "Durham, North Carolina").[\[18\]](#cite_note-18) The company opened its new headquarters at the [American Tobacco Campus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Tobacco_Historic_District "American Tobacco Historic District") in downtown Durham in September 2025.[\[2\]](#cite_note-Durm-1-2)[\[19\]](#cite_note-19)

The initial welcome packet from Dollar Shave Club

Dollar Shave Club offers three membership plans, which can be upgraded or downgraded at any time.[\[20\]](#cite_note-20) The membership service first launched March 6, 2012, via a YouTube video that went viral.[\[21\]](#cite_note-21) The YouTube video attracted an unanticipated amount of traffic, which crashed the company's server in the first hour. Once Dubin got the server working, he enlisted a team of friends and contractors to help fulfill the 12,000 orders that arrived in the first 48 hours of launching the video. The orders were initially packed by hand in a warehouse in [Gardena, California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardena,_California "Gardena, California"), before the company moved their warehouse and fulfillment to a third-party logistics center in Kentucky.[\[4\]](#cite_note-Riding_the_Momentum-4)

As of 2016, the company has acquired 3.2 million subscribers.[\[22\]](#cite_note-3.2_million_subscribers-22) Although the company primarily markets its products to men, approximately 20% of its customers are women.[\[23\]](#cite_note-23)

Dollar Shave Club offers three plans: "The Humble Twin" (two blades per razor, five razors per month, $4 per month), "The 4X" (four blades, four razors, $7) and "The Executive" (six blades, four razors, $10).[\[24\]](#cite_note-24) Each subscription comes with a compatible handle.

Most of the razor handles and blades are not made by Dollar Shave Club, but rather are re-sold [Dorco](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorco?action=edit&redlink=1 "Dorco (page does not exist)") products.[\[25\]](#cite_note-25)[\[26\]](#cite_note-26)

The company also sells related accessories, such as shave butter,[\[27\]](#cite_note-Pando-27) [wet wipes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet_wipe "Wet wipe"),[\[9\]](#cite_note-Forbes-9) and moisturizer.[\[28\]](#cite_note-28)

In late 2012, the company launched its program in Canada and Australia.[\[29\]](#cite_note-Wired-29)[\[30\]](#cite_note-BRW-30)

In 2015, the company expanded its product line to include hair care products, called "Boogie's".[\[31\]](#cite_note-31) The line includes [hair gel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_gel "Hair gel"), [hair cream](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_cream "Hair cream"), hair paste, [hair clay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_clay "Hair clay") and hair fiber.[\[32\]](#cite_note-32)

In May 2015, the company began hiring writers and editors for a new website, _[Mel Magazine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Magazine "Mel Magazine")_ (stylized as _MEL_[\[33\]](#cite_note-Perlberg_2015-33)) which went online in late 2015. The website contains editorial content described by the company as "men's lifestyle topics".[\[33\]](#cite_note-Perlberg_2015-33)[\[34\]](#cite_note-34) While the site does not host [sponsored content](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sponsored_content "Sponsored content"), its business model "relies upon being a branded publisher", according to _[Fast Company](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Company "Fast Company")_.[\[35\]](#cite_note-Guthrie_Weissman-35)

In December 2015, [Gillette](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillette "Gillette") brand owner [Procter & Gamble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procter_&_Gamble "Procter & Gamble") filed a [patent infringement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_infringement "Patent infringement") lawsuit that claimed Dollar Shave Club used its patented formulas to manufacture copycat blades.[\[36\]](#cite_note-36)[\[37\]](#cite_note-37) The lawsuit was settled in 2019 on undisclosed terms.[\[38\]](#cite_note-38)

In February 2018, the company launched in the United Kingdom.[\[39\]](#cite_note-39)

On March 6, 2012, the company uploaded a [YouTube](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube "YouTube") video entitled "Our Blades Are F\*\*\*ing Great" featuring CEO Michael Dubin, delivering his speech in a nonchalant and sarcastic manner.[\[40\]](#cite_note-Adage-40) The video prompted 12,000 orders in a two-day span after it was released, and has received over 27 million views as of November 2020.[\[5\]](#cite_note-LATimes-5)[\[41\]](#cite_note-41)

The video won "Best Out-of-Nowhere Video Campaign" at the 2012 _[Ad Age](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_Age "Ad Age")_ Viral Video Awards.[\[42\]](#cite_note-42) Dollar Shave Club was awarded a 2013 [Webby Award](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webby_Award "Webby Award") in the Fashion & Beauty category [\[43\]](#cite_note-43) and earned the People's Choice Webby Award in the Consumer Packaged Goods category.[\[44\]](#cite_note-44)

On June 4, 2013, Dollar Shave Club released a second video on YouTube called "Let's Talk About #2", which again starred its CEO and promoted One Wipe Charlies.[\[9\]](#cite_note-Forbes-9) The video won the Shorty Award in 2014 for best use of Social Media.[\[45\]](#cite_note-Shorty-45)

In 2014, Dollar Shave Club and its One Wipe Charlies teamed up with the [Colon Cancer Alliance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colon_Cancer_Alliance "Colon Cancer Alliance") in an effort to help "wipe out" colon cancer.[\[46\]](#cite_note-CCA-46) The company reports that during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month it reached 23 million people in spreading the message about the importance of getting screened. The company also donated $10,000 to the Colon Cancer Alliance, contributing a percentage of One Wipe Charlies' sales and putting a dollar value on social shares.[\[47\]](#cite_note-47) As part of the campaign, Michael Dubin had his own colonoscopy streamed live online.[\[48\]](#cite_note-ABC-48)
