**Dan Academic Center** ([Hebrew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_language "Hebrew language"): מרכז אקדמי דן _Merkaz Akademi Dan_) was an Israeli [higher education](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education "Higher education") institute that specializes in the [high tech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_tech "High tech") and [IT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology "Information technology") industry fields. It was established in 2011 within a technological industrial area in the city of [Petah Tikva](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petah_Tikva "Petah Tikva") in the [Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tel_Aviv_Metropolitan_Area "Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area"). It closed down in 2013, and its activity was merged with the Center for Academic Studies (Or Yehuda), which closed down in 2019.

Dan Academic Center was founded in 2011 by top [academics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_staff "Academic staff"), [chief executives](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_executives "Chief executives") and [entrepreneurs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrepreneurs "Entrepreneurs") from the [high tech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_tech "High tech") and [IT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology "Information technology") industries in Israel as an unprecedented initiative to create a unique academic [college](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College "College") that specializes in the high tech and IT fields and to bring together [academic education](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education "Higher education") with front-line practical knowledge [\[1\]](#cite_note-1) [\[2\]](#cite_note-2) . The close relations and collaborations between the center and joint [companies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companies "Companies") in the industry provide the [motto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motto "Motto") for the center "the industry's academy".

During the years prior to the establishment of the center [statistics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics "Statistics") have shown a decline in the number of [graduates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduation "Graduation") from the [computer science](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_science "Computer science") and [management information systems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management_information_systems "Management information systems") disciplines in [higher education](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higher_education "Higher education") [institutes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutes "Institutes") in [Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel "Israel")\[_[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed "Wikipedia:Citation needed")_\], which implied a growing demand for academically educated [manpower](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workforce "Workforce") in the high tech and IT industries. At the same time it is noted that a significant amount of high tech [employees](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employees "Employees") in Israel who do not hold a relevant [professional qualification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_qualification "Professional qualification") encounter a [glass ceiling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_ceiling "Glass ceiling") on their way up to more senior positions. Dan Academic Center was created with the purpose of generating a [workforce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workforce "Workforce") that maintains both a relevant academic qualification and cutting edge practical knowledge that would meet the needs of the industry. The center has defined its [mission statement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_statement "Mission statement") as to provide the next generation of [professionals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professionals "Professionals") in the high tech industry in Israel.

## Academia-Industry collaboration

\[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dan_Academic_Center&action=edit&section=2 "Edit section: Academia-Industry collaboration")\]

The [students](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Students "Students") in Dan Academic Center combine work and study. They work in high tech organizations, companies and IT units. The center provides experienced employees with the opportunity to acquire an academic qualification and thereby to increase their chances to get promoted to senior positions in the organizations they already work in. For [freshmen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freshmen "Freshmen") the center has created _Dan Works_, a [business networking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_networking "Business networking") platform in order to refer them for [employment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employment "Employment") in the joint companies. These companies hire the students for work so that in [graduation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduation "Graduation") they would have gained relevant practical experience. This helps the students through their study years to make a connection between theory and practice, to get to know professionals in their fields, and to increase their chances for employment in the high tech industry after graduation.

The center's academic activity and [curricula](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curricula "Curricula") are developed, among other criteria, according to the industry's needs so as to provide the students with both the theoretical and practical knowledge required. This scheme is directed by an [advisory board](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advisory_board "Advisory board") that consists of executives and entrepreneurs from the joint companies, to include [Matrix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_\(Company\)?action=edit&redlink=1 "Matrix (Company) (page does not exist)"), [John Bryce Training](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bryce_Training?action=edit&redlink=1 "John Bryce Training (page does not exist)"), [Cisco](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco "Cisco"), [Comverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comverse "Comverse"), [Intel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel "Intel"), [Oracle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Corporation "Oracle Corporation"), [Microsoft](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft "Microsoft"), [Cellcom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellcom_\(Israel\) "Cellcom (Israel)"), [Nokia Siemens Networks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_Siemens_Networks "Nokia Siemens Networks"), [Amdocs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdocs "Amdocs"), [Orbotech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbotech "Orbotech"), [013 Netvision](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/013_Netvision "013 Netvision"), [BMC Software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMC_Software "BMC Software"), [HP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hewlett-Packard "Hewlett-Packard"), [IBM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM "IBM") and [EMC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMC_Corporation "EMC Corporation").

Several [committees](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committees "Committees") in the advisory board are responsible to advance certain subject areas in the center to include academic [research](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research "Research") according to industry's needs, integration of industry-related contents into academic curricula, local [high school](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school "High school") academy partnership, [career development](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Career_development "Career development") and social involvement.

The center holds special events to include [lectures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lectures "Lectures") and [conferences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_conferences "Academic conferences"). The _coffee, technology and academy_ lectures are intended for registered and prospective students and are given by executives and top professionals from the joint companies. Through these lectures the students are informed about current and future trends in the high tech industry, and prospective students get the chance to learn more about the center and its collaboration with the industry. The joint companies may organize conferences in the center on various topics.

Dan Academic center is accredited by the [Council for Higher Education in Israel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_for_Higher_Education_in_Israel "Council for Higher Education in Israel") to teach for the following degrees.

- [Bachelor of Science](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Science "Bachelor of Science") in [Computer Science](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Science "Computer Science")
- [Bachelor of Arts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Arts "Bachelor of Arts") in [Management Information Systems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management_Information_Systems "Management Information Systems")
- [Bachelor of Arts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Arts "Bachelor of Arts") in [Business Administration](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Administration "Business Administration")

During their study years the students are offered to work and manage [projects](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projects "Projects") in the joint companies, to take [elective courses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_\(education\) "Course (education)") by which to focus on subjects they want to intern in and to take [courses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_\(education\) "Course (education)") from other departments. The students can also collaborate with one another on a project. In their third year of study they are required to conduct a [practicum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practicum "Practicum") in one of the joint companies, for which they are instructed both by the center and the relevant company.
