From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

**Appium** is an open source [automation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_automation "Test automation") tool for running scripts and testing native applications, mobile-web applications and hybrid applications on [Android](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_\(operating_system\) "Android (operating system)") or [iOS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS "IOS") using a webdriver.

Appium was originally developed by Dan Cuellar in 2011 under the name "iOSAuto", written in the [C#](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_Sharp_\(programming_language\) "C Sharp (programming language)") programming language.[\[1\]](#cite_note-:0-1)[\[2\]](#cite_note-:1-2)[\[3\]](#cite_note-3) The program was [open-sourced](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software "Open-source software") in August 2012 using the [Apache 2 license](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_License "Apache License").[\[1\]](#cite_note-:0-1)[\[4\]](#cite_note-4) In January 2013, [Sauce Labs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauce_Labs "Sauce Labs") agreed to fund Appium's development and motivated its code to be rewritten using [Node.js](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Node.js "Node.js").[\[1\]](#cite_note-:0-1)[\[2\]](#cite_note-:1-2)

Appium won the 2014 _Bossie award_ of [InfoWorld](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfoWorld "InfoWorld") for the best open source desktop and mobile software.[\[5\]](#cite_note-5) Appium was also selected as an _Open Source Rookie of the Year_ by Black Duck Software.[\[6\]](#cite_note-6)[\[7\]](#cite_note-7)

In October 2016, Appium joined the [JS Foundation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JS_Foundation "JS Foundation").[\[8\]](#cite_note-8) Initially as a mentor program, it graduated in August 2017.[\[2\]](#cite_note-:1-2)
