Executive Summary

## The category went from nonexistent to overcrowded in under two years.

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of optimizing how a brand appears in AI-generated search results across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. As AI assistants increasingly replace traditional search for product discovery and research, a new category of tools has emerged to help brands monitor, optimize and influence what these systems say about them.

The market moved fast. Profound, founded in 2024, reached unicorn status ($1B valuation) within 18 months. Adobe acquired Semrush for $1.9B, partly for its GEO capabilities. Total identified venture funding across pure-play GEO startups now exceeds $255 million. We identified and evaluated 20+ companies. What follows is an unbiased assessment of who they are, what they offer, how they price and which tool fits which buyer.

**Every existing "best GEO tools" list online is written by a GEO company ranking itself #1.** This is the first independent landscape analysis of the category.

No single tool dominates across all dimensions. Profound leads in data scale. Evertune uniquely bridges GEO and programmatic advertising. Scrunch is the only platform with AI-native content delivery (AXP). Peec AI is the fastest-growing by customer count (1,300+ in 10 months). AthenaHQ has the strongest technical pedigree (Google Search and DeepMind founders). Pricing ranges from €20/month to $15,000/month. The right tool depends more on your team size and use case than your budget.

Market Overview

## Why GEO exists.

The shift is structural. ChatGPT now serves over 800 million weekly users. More than 60% of information retrieval now happens through AI platforms. Gartner projects traditional search volume will drop 25% by 2026. When someone asks an AI assistant for a product recommendation, the brand that shows up in the answer wins. The brand that does not show up does not exist.

Traditional SEO was built for a world of blue links and page rankings. GEO is built for a world where a single AI-generated paragraph replaces ten pages of search results. The optimization targets are different (citations, sentiment, share of voice instead of keywords and backlinks), the measurement is different (probabilistic AI responses instead of deterministic rankings) and the competitive dynamics are different (up to 90% of cited sources in AI answers can change over time).

In the 18 months since the category emerged, at least $255 million in venture capital has flowed into pure-play GEO startups. Profound alone accounts for $155 million. The investor list includes Sequoia, Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, NEA, Salesforce Ventures, Felicis, Singular, 20VC, Khosla, Y Combinator, Bloomberg Beta, Antler and NVIDIA NVentures. This is not speculative seed money. This is conviction capital.

Competitive Landscape

## Three clusters. One market.

Three distinct clusters emerge from the data. The upper tier contains the well-funded enterprise platforms (Profound, Bluefish, Evertune) with broad feature sets and significant market traction. The middle band holds specialized mid-market tools with narrower feature sets but strong positioning in specific niches. The lower tier contains entry-level monitoring tools and free options that serve as on-ramps to the category.

**The most interesting positions are the outliers.** Evertune sits uniquely at the intersection of GEO and programmatic advertising. Scrunch occupies a distinctive position with its Agent Experience Platform (AXP) for AI-native content delivery. Peec AI is the fastest-growing company by customer acquisition rate, adding 300+ customers per month. AthenaHQ punches above its funding weight with Google Search and DeepMind founders.
