These are the two browsers most often recommended to someone who says they want privacy and does not want to configure anything. Both score 5 for privacy in our ratings — the only two that do — so the question is not which protects you better. It is how much browser you want wrapped around the protection.

## How much browser do you want?

DuckDuckGo's browser is deliberately minimal. It blocks trackers, ads and fingerprinting, dismisses cookie banners, strips targeted advertising from YouTube, and adds email tracker removal, all with essentially no settings to learn. Its one-tap fire button clears the current session outright. It is the browser you hand to someone who is not going to read a manual, and that simplicity is the product rather than a shortcoming.

The cost is capability, and it is substantial. DuckDuckGo scores 2 for extensions because it does not support them at all, and 2 for customisability. If any part of your workflow depends on a password manager extension, a research tool or a site-specific script, this browser cannot run it. It is also built on WebKit rather than Chromium, so it inherits Safari's rendering rather than Chrome's, and it has no Linux build — Mac, Windows, iOS and Android only.

## What Brave adds

Brave gives you the same protection with a full browser attached. It scores 5 for extensions, runs everything from the Chrome Web Store, and adds vertical tabs, a crypto wallet, a paid VPN and Tor-routed private windows, which DuckDuckGo has no equivalent for. It runs on all five major platforms including Linux. The trade-off is complexity: more settings, more surface area, and Shields that occasionally need switching off for a site that breaks. Brave also carries the optional Rewards system and its crypto associations, which DuckDuckGo pointedly does not.

Search is worth mentioning. Both default to a private search engine — DuckDuckGo to its own, Brave to Brave Search — and both are genuinely independent of Google's index to differing degrees.

## Which should you choose?

Choose DuckDuckGo Browser if you want strong privacy with no decisions to make, you browse on a phone or a laptop without extension dependencies, and a small, quiet browser is exactly what you were looking for.

Choose Brave if you want the same protection but need extensions, Linux support, or Tor windows — and you are willing to accept a larger browser with more to configure and a crypto component you can ignore.
